Alberta Health Services Learning Modules

Health Topics and Learning Modules were ongoing projects that I was responsible for working on with various clinical groups within Alberta Health Services in Calgary, Canada. This was while working on the User Experience team on myhealth.alberta.ca (MHA).

Learning Modules

Learning modules were created in response to clinical groups putting a focus on education and self-management with their patients. There was a need for a trustworthy online voice and set of resources that practitioners could rely on and comfortably recommend for their patients. Additionally, in an effort to increase efficiency while maintaining safe and effective healthcare, many programs were relying on engagement with these online resources as prerequisites for entry into programs. All in all, interactive and engaging learning modules quickly became a requirement from our website.

These modules came at a time of transition for our team, and so may not the best examples of great UX design, but we did our best with the extremely tight timelines and limited resources, while also maneuvering often sensitive political environments that come with health care. Below is one example of a learning module that I worked on.

Sleep Strategies

The Sleep Strategies learning module was a project that was handed over to me after the IA had already been completed. I worked with the group on restructuring a few of the elements as development went along, and information gaps and redundancies became evident. I also worked with them on implementing certain interactive elements like the quiz, and making sure that their module fit into our evolving learning module guidelines, like including a linear flow and emphasis on education and learning.

We were not able to conduct any preliminary user research, or any user testing/evaluation with this project. I was able to gain an understanding of the domain and the SMEs’ perspectives, which proved to be valuable and insightful when putting the module together. If I was given the chance to continue working on these learning modules, I would most definitely work on gaining the resources to conduct user research and user testing sessions. As these modules are involved with educating patients on how to self-manage an aspect of their health, or make a lifestyle change, I think that it’s imperative to understand what they need and how they engage with the information, as well as the interactive elements that we have created.
