Moodle

At City University London we use the Moodle Virtual Learning Environment [VLE] to support student learning. Moodle is a core part of the University’s Strategic Learning Environment (SLE) a project to combine the University’s portfolio of online learning technologies into a cohesive, seamless whole.

Moodle provides course websites with multiple functions & tools to support teaching and learning, including:

  • Discussion Forums
  • Coursework submission
  • Online testing
  • Group work
  • Teaching material

The University introduced Moodle as a replacment for CitySpace (WebCT Vista). This was primarily because of the flexibility provided by the Open Source nature of Moodle which allows us to adapt the system to our specific needs. The system is centrally maintained and managed, with steering groups comprised of representatives from all of the academic schools to ensure that the direction of development is consistent with the needs of the students and staff of the institution.
