Serena Collage Bugs and Known Fixes

CMS, Uncategorized.

Serena Collage was designed for Internet Explorer 6 and because of this it doesn’t play well with modern browsers. Collage has been “sunset” by Serena which means it is no longer being actively developed and any problems that arise in modern browsers will not be fixed by the vendors.

Unfortunately we are stuck with it for the time being so here is a collection of known issues and fixes that may make your life easier.

Which browser should I use?

Generally, Internet Explorer is still the best browser to use with Serena, even if you have the latest version (IE 9). If you are using IE 8 + it is best to use the CMS in “Compatibility Mode”.

You can turn on compatibility mode by pressing the “broken page” icon next to the address bar.

I can’t upload an image/file

If you are using IE8+ you may have trouble uploading images and documents. If you receive an error message saying “Please select a valid file type”, try this fix:

  1. In IE, click ‘Tools’ then ‘Internet Options’.
  2. Select the ‘Security’ tab.
  3. Select the ‘Trusted Sites’ icon, then select the ‘Sites’ button.
  4. In the ‘Trusted Sites’ window, type ‘https://*.city.ac.uk’ (without the quote marks) into the ‘Add this website to the zone’ field, select the ‘Add’ button then the ‘Close’ button.
  5. Now select the ‘Custom level…’ button.
  6. Find the “Miscellaneous” section and look for the option that says “Include local directory path when uploading files to a server”
  7. Make sure that option is Enabled.
  8. Select ‘OK’, and ‘OK’ again to close all the Internet Options windows.

You should now be able to upload files to the CMS using IE8.

Note: You will be unable to upload documents/images using Firefox

The drop down menus do not work

The dropdown menus require an (deprecated) ActiveX component called Serena Collage PopupMenu Control to be installed and enabled. To check if you have this:

  1. In IE, click ‘Tools’ then ‘Internet Options’.
  2. Click the “programs” tab
  3. Click “manage add-ons”
  4. Show “all add-ons”

The Serena add on should be listed under Serena Software Inc. and it’s status should be enabled.

If you do not have this add on installed, the only way we have found to install it is to reset Internet Explorer then navigate to the cms login page and be sure to allow any Active X component to be installed.

The WYSIWYG icons menu (e.g. bold, italic, check in, check out buttons etc.) is greyed out and un-selectable

If these are not working you may need to roll back to an older version of Java (Java 6, update 21). If you need help installing this on your machine please contact the IT Service Desk for assistance.

Links disappear

When using IE8+ text disappears when adding a hyperlink in some situations. A work around is to add a temporary word after the text you want to use as the link and only select the text you want leaving the temporary word unselected and use the link button. Then removing the temporary word when you have a working link.

If that doesn’t work, there is no known fix for this in IE (8+), the only other solution we know of is to either downgrade to IE 7< or use Firefox for adding links. Note: Firefox is not a supported browser (by Serena Collage) and comes with its own (long) list of problems.

I’m repeatedly asked for my login details when trying to edit content

This is caused by an update to Java. The problem appears to be introduced after Java 6 Update 26. It can be resolved by uninstalling your current version of Java and installing Java 6 Update 21. Please contact the IT Service Desk if you require assistance with this.

Update – It still doesn’t work!

If the above doesn’t work for you the only remaining option is to log in to Serena via a virtual machine running an old version of Internet Explorer.

The virtual machine will give you the environment that Serena Collage was designed for. However, you won’t be able to access files stored on your PC from inside the virtual machine. So, if you need to upload a file to the CMS, please email it to yourself, log in to Outweb whilst inside the Virtual Machine and access the file from there.
