Born in Covid Year – Core Lockdown Effects

The first years of life are crucial for the development of children’s talking and thinking skills. Lockdowns meant that family life was very different.
The BICYCLE study is mapping out whether being born-in-lockdown may have had effects on later talking and thinking. The study looks at children as they reach four years old, and compares them to children of the same age who were born-after-lockdown.
The research team is led by Professor Nicola Botting and Professor Lucy Henry from City St George’s, University of London, and supported by funding from the Economic and Social Research Council.

Talking and thinking are important skills for family, school and social life.
Our findings are helping us to understand whether support strategies are needed for children impacted by lockdowns.
The BICYCLE study will give us valuable insights about whether lockdowns had long-term effects on early childhood development.
Over 400 children and families are taking part!
