Start-up at Scale – The New Mould

Only shooting stars break the mould. It may be 15 years since Smash Mouth penned those words, but the sentiment is one that has stood the test of time. The modern equivalent might be something like: go hard or go home. In start-up land you most definitely have to go hard; and since the second year of university going home has not been an option for Eoin and I. Simultaneous studies and paid work leave little room for creativity, but if you are committed to breaking the mould, then you find a way.

Creative Fair was born out of a need for us to take control. Research released earlier this year showed that the creative industries are worth £71.4 billion/year in the UK alone. One breakdown gave this as being equivalent to £8 million/hour. It also showed that the sector accounted for 1.86 million jobs in 2012 or 5.6% of all employment.

The problem we have is that statistics rarely tell the whole story. What they lack is context. Working with some of Scotland’s greatest creative minds for the last four years has showed us that while there is continued investment and growth in the industry, how that wealth is shared is often poorly managed. Top dollars go to a small section of professionals at the top of their game, rather than into funding the livelihoods of many artists, on whose contribution to society our culture is based. We aim to change that. We want to take the vast opportunity that is being presented here; and make the creative industries fairer for all involved. And we want you to join us on the journey.

Right now, Creative Fair is looking for opportunities to partner with students and student bodies, providing chances for you to get involved and share your passions and skills. Are you a writer, a photographer, a marketer, a developer – do you just love music, art, creativity and the many things this sector has given us that make life a little bit more exciting? Then we want to hear from you! We are building A Global Network of Local Artists and fostering a community to provide platforms and services that will allow greater collaboration between creative individuals and organisations.

Whatever your interests, we have something that may be of interest to you. CF is not focussed on catering for one niche of this industry: to make fundamental change it has to be from the ground up. However, we want to empower each individual to reach their goals. It’s not everything for everyone, it’s anything for anyone. And only shooting stars break the mould.
