What’s it like to be an Industrial Placement Student at Mars

Mars was founded in 1911 and as a privately owned business, with no shareholders to answer to, we enjoy unusual levels of freedom when it comes to how we operate. Mars Global Services, a service Business to Mars, has 3 industrial placement programmes designed to give students a real feel for our business and what it’s like to build a long-term career at Mars. With us, that doesn’t just mean shadowing or doing a few admin tasks. We’ll trust students to lead their own projects which give students a real responsibility for their delivery. Whether that means leading a project to improve our customer service levels or partnering the business to develop a new business intelligence tool, the possibilities here really are limitless. Students will be able to make their time with us mean much, much more and, if everything goes well, there’s every chance it could take them on to our business technology graduate scheme – and beyond.

So what’s it like to be an IP Student:

“As a Business Technology IP Student, I work in the Service Excellence Expert Centre as a Service Performance Analyst for Mars Global Services. The majority of my time is spent working on the marketing, communication and delivery of the Mars IS Customer Satisfaction Survey. As a student finishing my second year at university, I’d never have thought 2 months later I would be helping to deliver a Business IT project which would go out to all Mars associates. But, don’t let the IT part put you off! The Business Technology Programme is more about how to use your Business Management and Project Management skills to use IT and work with the rest of the business”.

“I am part of the Knowledge Connections team in Mars Global Services! We work as an internal consultancy, helping associates fight their challenges and create opportunities, by connecting the right expertise that already exists in Mars. The best part about this role is helping people collaborate to ensure they achieve their goals!I love being part of the Mars community, and one of the main reasons for this is because of the people. Mars care about their community, as it’s the people who make things happen! We do this every day through a lot of networking, teamwork and generally enjoying what we do to make a difference. Every day is different for me and I get to talk to so many people from all areas of the business. Currently I am working with part of the team to launch a new virtual networking platform, once it is launched we will be able to help everyone get started and make sure their time on the site is much more productive. If you feel like Mars could be where you would like to make the most of your placement, then the only tip I would have for you is to be yourself! Bring lots of energy, be confident and be ready for challenging but rewarding work!”

We’re not looking for deep technical expertise, but people who are great at coming up with new ideas, you’ll have the confidence to share them with the business and go away and make things happen. To get the most out of these opportunities, you’ll also need to be curious and keen to learn.

We offer a competitive salary of £18,500 + £200 relocation based on our site in Slough Berkshire. We’ll get you started with an induction which will see you visiting our different sites and learning about our business. You’ll also work with your line manager on a Personal Development Plan so you can set yourself objectives and make sure you get the most out of your time with us.
