Top 5 Reasons Why You Should See An Application Adviser – by Carolina Are

As a former City University BA Journalism student, I was aware of the existence of the Careers Service but never really used it. For two years, I became one of those people who sent the same CV and the same cover letter to every company and then wondered why I wasn’t getting a job. Luckily things changed once I joined a society and started working part-time in recruitment, but I could have used my time here way better and fixed my CV much earlier, and for free. How? By going to see an Application Adviser. Here are five reasons why you should too.

1 It only takes 20 minutes

Application adviser appointments run for 20 minutes in the Careers Service, so as long as you log onto Careers Hub at 5.30 PM the day before a lecture you can book it without massively changing your schedule. Do be aware however that, if you’ve got a graduate scheme deadline coming up, others students probably will too, so plan in advance!

2 It’s not a job interview

Many students feel initially intimidated by coming to see me. Of course, it’s daunting to face the possibility to have your CV, something you’ve worked so hard to put together, ripped apart by a stranger. But hey, would you rather have it done by a potential employer? Application advisers have been trained to spot the mistakes every employer would spot, and to feedback in a friendly and helpful manner even if it’s 9:30 on a Monday morning. Our job is to help you make the most out of your future. So I promise, I’m not going to shout at you. Unless you call me madam (which has happened) – I’m 24 years old, FYI. Not THAT old.

3 It’s free

Loads of companies out there will ask you for a fee to feedback on your CV. Application Advisers do it for free, and can also help with your cover letter, personal statement, application forms, LinkedIn profile. Of course, unless there’s very little to change, we can’t possibly feedback on all those things in 20 minutes… so take advantage of this 100% free service and come see us once a week if you have to. That’s what we’re here for.

4 Chances are you are more amazing than you think…

“I’m in the top five students out of 500 in my course, do you think I should put that in?” Uhm… YES. One of my favourite things about my job is getting to find out about all the amazing things students do, so don’t be afraid to showcase your talents and achievements. It’s not bragging. Except when it is, and I tell you to tone it down. That’s what an extra pair of eyes are for.

5 …But don’t be afraid to come see us if you haven’t worked much

I’ve seen many students in a state of despair because they haven’t done internships, or they haven’t worked part-time during their degree. It’s ok. That’s what we’re here for: we’ll either find something in your experience that could be helpful towards getting the role of your dreams, or we’ll suggest ways to boost your CV through Unitemps, the Careers Service or other opportunities. Your CV is a work in progress, and we’re here to make it better.
