A publishing event with Andy Pratt and Chris Rojek

SASS Research Students’ Community (RSC) organized a colloquial panel with Prof. Chris Rojek from Sociology and Prof. Andy C. Pratt from Culture, and Creative Industries last week to mark the end of the term and the upcoming festive season. With the REF results of 2014 shortly coming in as well, the event proved to be very influential amongst PhD students and ECRs. Generating interest across different disciplines and platforms and reaching beyond the City’s own student body (participants from other London universities were present), the panel discussed the A to Z of publishing, starting with making a submission to a journal, the decision-making parameters one would need to consider, the implications of REF, impact, contracts and copyright. Students were interested to learn more about predatory publishers, how the process differs for books and monographs and the length of the process in general.

Seen in the media above, present from CCI were also PhD students Aysegul and Kate, who co-chaired the panel together. They also used this opportunity to briefly comment on SASS Research Students’ Commnity and its events in general.

Having published well over 200 journal articles, books, book chapters, and others between themselves, Professors Pratt and Rojek shared their insight and wisdom with the participants. They both brought a wealth of experience in all aspects of publishing, including being on the ‘other side’ as editors of journals. The panel went overtime with participants’ questions, and participants stayed on for a buffet lunch and refreshments.

RSC is already in the process of planning more events next term. So, look out for these to be announced next term!
