BSA Race and Ethnicity Studies Workshop and Mentoring Scheme
Diana Yeh was a discussant during a workshop co-organised by the BSA Race and Ethnicity Study Group and the BSA Postgraduate Forum. The event brought together early career researchers with more experienced researchers within the field of race and ethnicity studies and to launch the Race and Ethnicity Study Group’s new mentoring scheme.
Panel sessions, designed to allow participants to introduce themselves via their work and facilitate feedback on their ideas by more established figures, were structured around the following thematic areas:
– ‘Theorising ‘Race’, Racisms, and Racialisation’ (Discussants: Dr Sweta Rajan-Rankin and Professor John Solomos)
– ‘Ethnicities, Intersecting Experiences, and Identities’ (Discussants: Dr Diana Yeh and Professor Les Back)
– ‘Migration, Space, Place, and Belonging’ (Discussants: Professor Steve Garner and Dr Aaron Winter)
The day was a fantastic chance to hear about the exciting research in progress on a range of projects on race and racisms. On Diana’s panel alone, there were presentations on British Caribbean Identity and Dance (Tia-Monique Uzor, De Montfort University); Social mobility of Mapuche indigenous people in Chile (Denisse Sepúlveda Sánchez, University of Manchester); young Black Caribbean women’s poor sexual health outcomes (Josina Calliste, University College London); Nationalism, Devolution and Ethnic Identity in Scotland (Minna Liinpää, University of Glasgow); Responses to UKIP and the EU Referendum among Black Asian Minority Ethnic People (Neema Begum, University of Bristol); and the Experiences of Gypsy/Traveller Girls in Scotland (Dr Geetha Marcus, University of Edinburgh).
