The official launch of CERES industrial consortium and First Spring Meeting was held at City, University of London on 13th May 2022.

CERES Industrial Consortium was officially launched last Friday by Prof Ahmed Kovacevic, Howden/RAEng Research Chair in Compressor Technology and Prof Abdulnaser Sayma, Head of Engineering and Director of the Thermo-Fluid Research Centre. Representatives from nine companies and the Royal Academy of Engineering joined us for a hybrid meeting we delivered from the City, University of London. The founding members of CERES are Howden, Mayekawa, Carrier, Ansys and PDM Analysis. Representatives from Jaeckllin, Edwards, Total Energies and Trane Technologies have also attended this meeting to explore the benefits of joining this forward-looking consortium.

In-person attendees later joined the annual poster competition and social event organised by City’s Thermo-Fluids Research Centre. We had a chance to meet researchers from the Centre, have guided visits to the test cells and inform learn about the research being conducted at the moment.

The rest of the day was devoted to project proposals’ presentations by researchers from City, University of London. Seven projects addressing different issues in compressors and expanders technology were presented, followed by a fruitful discussion.

I’ve never been to a consortium before so this was very insightful. I loved seeing different test rigs, talking to the PhD students, learning about new methods and meeting new people, whom I hope to see again 😄

It was also my first time at the City, University of London!

As a young engineer at Mayekawa, I found myself thinking of many ways to solve problems, with a lot of “what ifs”, “how’s” etc – I just felt so inspired by the enthusiasm of the PhD students!”

Lihini Seneviratne, Graduate Mechanical Engineer at MAYEKAWA Europe.

„Since 2019, we had the idea to form this consortium. It is not very common way of collaboration between industry and academia and the inspiration was from American Universities who have similar establishments.

I am very pleased that we had large interest from the Compressor Industry to join CERES and am thankful to the staff at City for helping to setup the procedures which will enable us to grow and make an impact towards Net0 targets.”

Prof Ahmed Kovacevic, Howden/RAEng Research Chair in Compressor Technology, City, University of London.
