Considering a career change? Consider Teach First’s Leadership Development Programme!

Alumni Notice Board, Events.

Teach First banner

In the UK today, the link between how much your family earn and how well you do in school and in life is stronger than almost anywhere in the developed world. It doesn’t have to be this way

Teach First are a charity working to end educational inequality. They believe that inspirational teaching and leadership is key to helping every child succeed, regardless of their background. Teach First supports people like you to become revolutionary teachers on their Leadership Development Programme (LDP) in schools across England and Wales.

The LDP is a personalised two-year programme encompassing high-quality training, supportive coaching, and a PGCE qualification. You’ll retrain as a teacher in one of our partner schools, and whether or not you decide to remain in the classroom, the experience and skills you’ll gain will change your life, and theirs.

They’re looking to expand their reach and place more life-changing leaders into Early Years, primary and secondary schools throughout the UK’s poorest communities.

They are hosting a series of presentations exclusively for anyone considering changing career to join their LDP. Their employer presentations will give you the chance to find out more about teaching on the LDP, get your questions answered by their Experienced Hires team, and find out how you can apply for a place in their 2016 cohort.

Visit their website to learn more about the LDP and to book your place today.

Change career. Change lives.

Dr Ali Kabiri’s Book Launch Event at Cass
“The Great Crash of 1929: A Reconciliation of Theory and Evidence”

We are very pleased to invite you to a launch event for Ali Kabiri’s, The Great Crash of 1929: A Reconciliation of Theory and Evidence, published by Palgrave MacMillan.

This important new book investigates what drove stocks so high and then caused them to crash. Ali thoroughly re-examines all the unanswered questions on 1929 and, using new data sets, allows the reader to understand the changes which led to the 1920s stock market boom and the 1929 crash and answers the key question of whether 1929 was a bubble or not, and which part of the bubble, if present, could have been anticipated.

Annual London Reunion 2014 at City

Alumni Notice Board, Arts and Social Sciences News, Business School Stories, Events, Health Sciences News, Law News, Mathematics, Computer Science & Engineering News.

Every year City University London alumni are invited back to their alma mater for the Annual Reunion in London. The event gives former students and members of staff an opportunity to catch up and network while enjoying refreshing drinks and lovely food. The most recent reunion took place on Saturday 12th July.

Alumni and their guests were welcomed by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Curran, who spoke about recent developments at City and the exciting changes which are happening around the campus, including the new CitySport building on Goswell Road, due to open in late 2014.

This year, for the first time, the Reunion offered a number of optional activities in collaboration with the five Schools. The School of Arts and Social Sciences welcomed alumni with a fascinating talk, delivered by Professor Jean K Chalaby, Head of Sociology, about the TV industry and its cultural significance. Ronen Palan, Professor of International Politics then examined the meaning of a fair, economically stable and politically legitimate society after the Global Financial Crisis, and finally Professor Stephen Cottrell, Head of the Departments of Music and Culture and Creative Industries, presented the latest operations of Music at City and played a selection of recent student work.

Guests were also invited to explore the outstanding new facilities of the Clinical Skills Centre at the School of Health Sciences. Professor Stanton Newman, Dean of the School, gave them a warm welcome and also explained the importance of the School’s leading healthcare research and its impact on policy and in society. There was also an opportunity for attendees to participate in interactive demonstrations.

Professor Steve Haberman, Dean of Cass Business School, talked about the latest developments in the School and encouraged attendees to participate actively on any activities offered at Cass. Meanwhile Law Librarian, Emily Allbon, was offering a library tour to our guests and explaining the introduction of a new online resource called Lawbore. This tool will help City Law students to access a variety of information that will help them with their studies, including their mooting and legal research.

The new School of Mathematics, Computer Sciences and Engineering was introduced by Professor Roger Crouch who then led a tour of the recently refurbished laboratory facilities and gave a presentation about the recent School achievements and its future direction. Finally, there was an entrepreneurial showcase organised by the Enterprise Office. A couple of City alumni entrepreneurs were invited to present their businesses and talk about their experience.

The 2014 Reunion continued when our guests gathered back at the Great Hall where there was the opportunity to network whilst enjoying refreshments. Alumni from over the decades were invited to leave messages on a message board. Here are some of their memories:

“My time at City (Northampton College) was the best time of my life.” Richard, 1958-1964.

“Even though I am an alumna now, I still do feel like a student of this wonderful university” Natalia, 2013

“Being a student at City was the best time ever for me! I miss all those days and great friends from all over the world” Keta, 2004

“Two of the most productive years of my life, academically and for personal development. A very inspiring start-up session too!” Janet, 2001

Several alumni expressed their warm feelings towards City by making donations to the City Future Fund, enabling us to improve the experience for their successors at the University and a number also signed up to be a Mentor under the widely recognised Professional Mentoring Scheme.

Thank you to all who attended and we look forward to welcoming you in 2015!

Annual Scholarships, Prizes and Bursaries Evening 2014

Alumni Notice Board, Arts and Social Sciences News, City Future Fund, City News, Events, Health Sciences News, Law News, Mathematics, Computer Science & Engineering News, New Courses and Scholarships , , , .

Scholarship-Awards-Ceremony-2014One of the most enjoyable events in our academic year, according to the Vice-Chancellor of City University London Professor Paul Curran, is the ‘Annual Scholarships, Prizes and Bursaries Evening’.

The event brought some of our most outstanding students together with some of our most generous and committed donors in an evening filled with emotional thank you speeches and a warm family atmosphere.

The purpose of the evening was to formally recognise the students who have received these awards and to also say thank you to the individuals and organisations that have generously funded them.

Deborah – Fay Ndlovu, who received the Wellcome Trust Scholarship and is finishing her MA in Science Journalism, gave a truly inspirational speech about her academic and personal journey and thanked the Trust for supporting her. She highlighted the importance of facing challenges in order to re-discover her own abilities, and also how she will be going back to her hometown in South Africa as a ‘new woman’.

Deborah said “I have acquired a diverse set of skills through this course and renewed my confidence in my career and myself. I have learnt through my time at City that an academic institution isn’t just designed to equip students with professional skills but can build their personality as well.”

“Thank you to the Wellcome Trust and to all of you donors who have allowed me and all the students here tonight to see that, paraphrasing actress Lupita Nyo’ongo, ‘No matter where I am from – and what my past is – my dreams are valid’

Students who benefited from the City Future Fund Scholarship and Travel Bursary Scholarship were Duc Hoang, Zoe Rinaldi, Justyna Wolczyk, Zahra Abdollahi, Karthik Budidha and Natalia Grincheva.

City University London would like to thank all the institutions, charitable foundations, Livery companies and individual donors who have made these scholarships, prizes and bursaries possible. Your support enables the University to recognise outstanding academic performance and continues to help us attract the most able students. Learn more about supporting our students.
