As some of you may already be aware City has invested in the Roger system, a Personal Portable Induction Loop (PIL) for staff, students and visitors to the University who use hearing aids or have cochlear implants and may benefit from assistive technology. Staff and students may keep their Roger system with them throughout their time at City. Information Services have been working with Disability Support and Occupational Health to introduce involved in this initiative.

Some people with hearing loss who use hearing aids or have cochlear implants may face barriers whilst at the University, including:

  • Hearing students during lectures, seminars and tutorials
  • Communicating with other staff and students
  • Integrated loop system not working or available
  • Background noise in communal areas
  • Following conversations during meetings

We have trialled a solution to support staff, students and visitors who have hearing loss and may benefit from assistive technology. We have also invested in a training programme and offer a portable hearing solution to support individuals, which is called Roger system.

The Roger Pen is a modern, sleek and elite amplifier that can really help improve one’s working lifestyle. It comes with a powerful transmitter that reduces unwanted background noise, meaning sound can be heard from up to 20 metres away. The system features a discreet wireless microphone, used by the person speaking and a MyLink receiver suitable for use with any hearing aids/cochlear implants featuring a T-Coil.

The Roger system can help in:

Large group settings e.g. meetings

  • Hearing students in lectures or presentations
  • Watching educational videos
  • Visits and conferences
  • Noisy environments

Our Disability Support team, Occupational Health, Reception staff and several members of IS Service Desk staff have also been trained to communicate effectively with people who have hearing impairment are hearing impaired or have hearing loss and also in using the Roger system.

PILs are available for students and staff to keep with them throughout their time at City and can also be borrowed on a daily basis from the following locations across campus:

  • Northampton Square Reception
  • College Building Reception
  • Rhind Building Reception
  • Myddelton Street Reception
