London is buzzing with tech meetups; a chance for like-minded people get together to share ideas and network. However, there are very few women that attend these events. Organisations and developers are starting to realise this and are committed to changing the imbalance. Enter…Code First: Girls.
Code First: Girls is a social enterprise committed to running community activities to help women who want to build careers in tech and entrepreneurship. They work alongside other companies as well as young and professional women to help increase the number of women in tech!
Code First: Girls aim to provide support to develop personal and professional skills, including technical skills in coding and programming as well as personal skills. They aim to connect women to a community of other talented and like-minded women and companies who can support and accompany them through their professional development, and help companies train staff and develop their talent management policies and processes.
Code First: Girls runs free part-time coding courses for young women/university students across the UK and Ireland. When our very own Anett Soos from the Web Team heard that they were running a free course at City, she was very keen to get involved and even became an instructor for them!
If you are interested in learning HTML/JavaScript, you can register for a place on the course by following this link: http://www.codefirstgirls.org.uk/
City is a great advocate of gender equality and it is fantastic that we got involved in this event. Hopefully in the near future we will see more women in tech not just here, but across the IT industry!
