Sir David Attenborough on Criticising President Trump, and How We Can Help the Planet

Sir David Attenborough told the Radio Times Magazine that the thing everyone can do to help the planet is end waste. Specifically, he emphasised the need to act responsibly in the consumption of food and power.

“Above all,” said Attenborough, “we have to bear one thing in mind – every single mouthful of food and every breath of air we take is dependent on a healthy planet.”

Reducing the consumption of meat, he warns, should also be a priority. When asked about this topic, he told Radio Times: “we can’t go on eating meat at the rate we have been.” While he is not a vegetarian or vegan, he reveals to have lost a significant part of this appetite for meat. The reason for that is subconscious, but he argues “the state of the planet” as a possible reason.

However, the 92-year-old naturalist and presenter said his appetite reduction was not a dramatic change to his diet. He stated that he does not feel “deprived”, and has not felt that this reduction in consuming meat has cost him highly.

Earlier this week, Sir Attenborough didn’t shy away from criticising President Trump, who has been a longstanding denier of climate change. Confronting President Trump is not something he shies away from, as he said he would attempt to convince the President, whom he called “blind”, that the threat of climate change is real.

“I have no idea as to whether I could convince him”, the broadcaster reasoned, “but it would be cowardly not to take up the challenge, would it not?”

In his first direct collaboration with Netflix, Sir Attenborough’s next narration project is the follow-up to his popular series ‘Planet Earth‘. The follow-up is an eight-part documentary entitled Our Planet, which will look into some of the world’s rarest animals and their natural habitats.

All episodes of Our Planet are scheduled to be released April 5th, on Netflix.
