Work Package 2

Rapid Qualitative Assessment of Nature-based Solutions

In this work package, we are conducting two qualitative research methods (Rapid Qualitative Analysis and Deliberative Prioritisation Workshops) with stakeholders from across the agricultural system including those who finance, promote and implement Nature-based Solutions (NbS). We want to understand their views and engagement with Nature-based solutions, and the conditions (resources, policies, support) required to enable NbS policy to be implemented successfully.

For our Rapid Qualitative Analysis (RQA), we will be conducting up to 80 semi-structured interviews with people working across the food system, including farmers, land managers, those working in the agricultural supply chain, academics, NGOs and policy makers. Speaking to a broad range of food systems stakeholders will enable us to capture both the conditions that directly affect engagement with NbS for climate change adaptation, but also those that are more indirect. The rapid qualitative research approach is useful for time-sensitive policy issues such as the fast-changing agricultural environmental land management schemes (ELMs), as it will allow us to provide timely findings from a large number of stakeholders.

Following our RQA, we will be conducting approximately three deliberative prioritisation workshops with key food system stakeholders. The nature and topics of the workshops will be influenced by the findings from our RQA related to the conditions (resources, policies, support) required to enable NbS policy to be implemented successfully.

Research Questions

  1. What are stakeholders’ perspectives of NbS and how are they being implemented in the UK?
  2. What are the necessary conditions (i.e. resources, policies, support) required to ensure NbS policy options are effective and implemented successfully?
