Session 3D (Talk1) Do the current Continuous Professional Development approaches for Registered Nurses and Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) within Perioperative Care meet their learning needs?

Teopista Ssemakula (Senior Practice Development Nurse)  & MA Academic Practice Student in LEaD, City, University of London

[Lightning talk]

This is an ongoing work and the aim of the proposal is to develop a comprehensive self-assessment strategy that will facilitate the evaluation of the current state of CPD, explore innovative approaches whilst identifying areas for improvement. The strategies and insights gleaned from the self-assessment can be applied to other contexts where continual professional development is critical to delivering high-quality care or maintaining professional competence.

Key Areas to be Addressed in my talk:

a) A thorough needs analysis, enabling participants to assess their learning needs and gaps and gather information on required knowledge, skills, and competencies (Stobinski, 2020).

b) Assessment of current CPD approaches about accessibility, relevance, and effectiveness. The assessment will consider factors such as the availability of educational resources and the flexibility of delivery formats. The self-assessment will also analyse the impact of CPD activities on professional development outcomes (Ahlquist, 2022).

c) The self-assessment will analyse the alignment between identified learning needs and existing CPD programmes, determining areas for improvement, and any significant gaps or mismatches that may hinder the effectiveness of professional development efforts (Kirkpatrick & Kirkpatrick, 2006).

d) Insights from the study: Investigation into innovative and emerging CPD approaches, which can improve professional development (Ahlquist, 2022) such as simulation-based training (Cant and Cooper, 2010) and virtual reality.

Overall, the findings from this study will contribute to developing and enhancing CPD programmes tailored to professional needs and preferences.
