Keynote | Co-production of skills and values learning: what we’ve learned from each other, and what you might learn from our mistakes

Daniel Barrow, Civil Service Fast Stream and Tamara Hervey, The City Law School

Tamara K Hervey (LLB, PhD, FAcSS, PFHEA, HonFPH) is Jean Monnet Professor of EU Law ad personam at the City Law School, City University, London. Her called-name is Tammy, and her pronouns are she/her.

Hervey’s research interests include European Union law; comparative health law; legal research methodologies; legal pedagogy; and equality, diversity and inclusion in Higher Education. From 2016-2023, she also worked on Brexit and health. She is author/editor of 20 books and over 200 other publications. Hervey works with a large network of academics across Europe and in North America. She also regularly co-produces work with third sector entities and with undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Hervey’s work on legal pedagogy includes The Fairness Project, a collaborative project spanning three universities and 10 student interns over three years; and developing skills and values learning to support a range of diverse student needs.


Tammy has been co-producing research with students, including into pedagogy, since 2004. She has worked with more than 30 students, on more than 10 different projects, and has produced 10 publications on pedagogy along the way. Dan worked with Tammy on a large product on skills & values learning for undergraduate law students, which included significant equality, diversity and inclusion components. In this keynote, Dan and Tammy will reflect on what they learned from each other, and other students involved in co-production, and on what members of the audience might learn from them, including the mistakes they made.
