Bookable booths at Northampton Square

In response to your feedback in focus groups and Student Experience Committees we are trialling bookable Technobooths on Level 3 at Northampton Square during the busy 24/7 period (23rd April – 31st May).

The four Technobooths can be booked for up to three hours per day during library staffed hours and are equipped with a PC, large screen, camera, and power for 2-6 people to collaborate.

Level 3 is a quiet study area, so please remember to keep your conversations low whilst using these booths.

We will be asking for more feedback further along the design process.

Email reminders

Last night’s upgrade to our system prevented our email reminders from being sent out.  Our suppliers are working to resolve this and we will send them out later today.  In the mean time, you can log in to your Library Account to view the due dates of your items and renew them if necessary.

Library system downtime: March 11th-12th

We are upgrading our library systems overnight Monday 11th – Tuesday 12th March.  As a result you may experience intermittent periods of downtime during which you will be unable to:

  • login to online resources
  • see book availability through CityLibrary Search
  • request items, or
  • login to your CityLibrary Account to renew items.

Please plan ahead to conduct research and manage your account ahead of this time.

Article access: scheduled maintenance Saturday 9th February

Due to scheduled maintenance by one of our suppliers,  direct ejournal and Journal Article links  from CityLibrary Search, Reading Lists, and Google Scholar will not work on Saturday 9th February.

The maintenance will start at 1am on Saturday and last for up to 24 hours.

Links to journals from the Journals A-Z, and the Is it  @CityLibrary links in databases such as EBSCOhost and Web of Science will also be affected.

You will be able to access the articles you need by following the instructions on our FAQs page.

Northampton Square Level 6 closure

Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th December

Level 6 of the Northampton Square Library will close at 4pm today, Wednesday 19th December, and will re-open on Friday 21st.  This is to allow for some noisy drilling work to take place.

Silent study spaces are available on Levels 4 and 5 of the Library.

This work has been scheduled to take place in one of our quieter weeks in order to minimise disruption.  Apologies for any inconvenience this causes you.

Level 3 at Northampton Square Library

Although the spaces in the Northampton Square Library have been quieter over the summer, library staff have been busy using your feedback to make changes.

level 3 can be very loud, reducing noise levels would be very good

This was a common theme in our recent feedback campaigns, with many of you suggesting that you would appreciate a quieter, more studious study space on Level 3.

From September, Level 3 of the Northampton Square Library is for quiet study.  When using Level 3 please keep conversations to a minimum, and if you want to work in a large group be considerate of your fellow students and book a group study room or use one of the other collaborative study spaces throughout the University, such as in the Tait Building.

To make the space more suitable for quiet study we have purchased new furniture and the last pieces will be delivered and installed this week.

Water fountain at Northampton Square Library

Unfortunately, the water supply to the water fountain on Level 3 of the Northampton Square Library will not be restored until the end of September.  This is because the works to the cafe on the Level 1 walkway of the University Building have overrun.

Drinking water is available from the water fountains in the Tait Building (near the Oliver Thompson Lecture Theatre), and the Drysdale Mezzanine (down the stairs/lift from the Main Entrance).

Apologies for the inconvenience.
