Being in the midst of a global pandemic is not easy for anybody. Having to study or work from home, not seeing friends and family in person, and worrying about our loved ones and our own health makes this a difficult time for all of us.
We’re constantly updating our collections so that you can access the best resources possible.
Over the last few weeks we have been busy adding new e-books to CityLibrary Search: some of these are brand new titles, including those chosen by you through one of our Recommend a book for purchase schemes; others are digital versions of print books which are inaccessible because of the lockdown.
Here, our Subject Librarians have picked out some highlights from the new items in our collections to help you while you are studying at home. The title links will take you through to the e-book record where you can login to access the full text.
In order to support students, academics and researchers during the coronavirus pandemic, a number of academic publishers are choosing to make some of their content temporarily free to access online.
We’ve created a special Library Guide to highlight the resources which are now available to you, with instructions on how to access them if a separate log-in or other method is needed.
The guide includes some sources specifically related to the coronavirus pandemic itself, plus there are links to Senate House Library which is also providing special online access to students.
We are updating our guide all the time, so watch out for more databases, e-book platforms and multidisciplinary resources being added in the coming weeks.
If you do come across something which might be useful for your research, assignment or project, please remember that access to these resources and services is time-limited.

Liberating CityLibrary (Everyone)
Increase our range of books written by people from a BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) background, books by and about LGBTQI+ people, and titles which recognise overlapping identities and experiences such as gender, class, sexuality and disability. If it costs less than £100 to buy a digital copy we’ll purchase it straight away.

Have you ever wondered why a library resource is not working or wanted to check if there is any upcoming system maintenance? You can now quickly do so, by checking our Current status of library services and resources page!
We knew that having a centralised place to check would make your life easier, so we worked hard to produce a tool that would clearly show you the status of Library Services’ core systems and services. So now, in one place, we are able to highlight to you known issues and periods of service disruption, and provide you with information on alternatives where necessary.
On that page you will be able to check the status of our online resources, services and spaces. Specific major issues are highlighted at the top, but you can click on each category to get more details on what is happening (an alert shows next to a category when there is an issue related to it), and learn about other potential issues:
- In Online resources are listed current issues with library resources and news items about upcoming maintenance, as well as workarounds for known issues. If you have found an issue with a resource, this page may tell you why. If not, you can report the issue to email@example.com
- By checking the status of our Services, you will know if any of them is disrupted – did you know that all but one are available at the moment?
- Currently all our physical Spaces are closed, of course, but this will be a useful page to remember checking when we reopen.

We are pleased to announce that we have been able to work with two of our suppliers to bring temporary off-campus access to two important resources that are normally only available on specific PCs: Eikon and Dealogic.
To get access to either resource, email firstname.lastname@example.org from your City email account, and a username and password will be issued to you for up to 23 hours. Each username and password is valid from 10:00 BST until the following day at 09:00 BST. You can request another session by emailing email@example.com. We have a limited number of licences for each database, so if all usernames and passwords have been issued, we will add you to a queue and issue you with details when it is your turn.
Eikon contains news, analytics and financial content. It also includes a range of prices for multiple assets, fundamentals, estimates and charts. Eikon users can find data from Worldscope, I/B/E/S, Lipper and Asset 4. Use the Excel Add-In to download data and access Datastream. The buildings might be closed but CityLibrary is most definitely open. Whatever help you need accessing and using Library resources and services, there are lots of ways you can get it, including:
We have extended our Online Chat service so you can now speak to a member of Library staff online from 9am to 5pm during weekdays. You can find the Online Chat box via the Library homepage.
When Online Chat isn’t available, you can still ask questions and find answers using our Ask Us service. If you can’t find an answer to your question straight away, simply submit a new question and we’ll get back to you with an answer as soon as possible.

Library Services is 100% committed to supporting both the study needs and wellbeing of all of our students, staff and library users.
With this in mind, we’re making a number of changes to how we do things in order to make sure your access to resources and services continues with as minimal disruption as possible throughout the coming weeks:
Library closure, increased online services
From 5pm Friday 20th March the Northampton Square Library will be closed until further notice – all opening times can be found on our website.
- We have extended our Online Chat hours to 09:00-17:00, Monday to Friday.
All physical items borrowed since 9th March have had the loan period extended and now won’t be due back until 1st June.
Library Services subscribe to a wide range of online resources and e-books and we’ve spent the last couple of weeks increasing our e-book availability as much as we can; we’re also working closely with publishers to try gain extra access to titles and publications too.
- Wherever possible we’ve made digital course readings available via Reading Lists Online.

Library Services has auto-renewed the majority of items which were due back from March 9th onwards until June, and any new items borrowed will also be extended longer than normal. There are a few instances where this hasn’t been possible – if this is the case with any of your items please get in touch and we will manually update your records for you.
We are also increasing our Online Chat service hours, so you can now speak to a member of Library staff online from 9am to 5pm during weekdays.
These are just some of the steps we are taking to eliminate as much stress and disruption as possible during what is a challenging and overwhelming time.
We are doing everything we can to make sure resources and support remains available to you when you need it, including extending our online services and adding to our collections.
