Do you have students interested in computing, IT, or Maths? Data Science may be an interesting pathway for them to explore, especially as the demand for skilled data scientists expands.
In this blog Dr Aidan Slingsby (Senior Lecturer at City) provides a useful overview of why students might want to consider Data Science and some information about studying at City.
Why Data Science?
The amount and quality of data that are collected is increasing rapidly. Buried within this is likely to be information that can be used to make data-driven decisions that can improvement society, marketing, business and science.
It is not surprising that skilled data scientists who know how to uncover important insights in potentially vast quantities of data are highly sought after. All kinds of organisations are now looking for data scientists. Students with a Data Science degree are attractive and well-suited for these types of roles.
“Data Science” is a surprisingly broad field. Some data scientists work in less-technical roles that focus on establishing how data science can meet business goals. Others focus developing cutting-edge data science research that can extract new types of information from new types of data. Others directly use data science to drive data-driven decision-making.
Data Science encompasses a broad field of technique including traditional statistical approaches, modelling, neural networks and artificial intelligence for analysing data.
Data Science at City
City, University of London has the longest-running and most well-known master’s programmes in Data Science in London, which was established in 2014.
We now offer a unique 4-year integrated master’s degree: MSci (Hons) Data Science
In the first two years, students follow our standard Computer Science programmes where they learn basic the fundamentals of computers, programming and algorithmic thinking. In the final two years, they then take many of the data science modules that our MSc students will be taking, including specialist modules at the cutting edge of data science including Neural Computing, Machine Learning, Big Data and Cloud Computing.
We also offer one-year placements and professional pathway routes as part of the programme. These are incredible opportunities to get industry experience along the way.
Students doing this course will:
- Acquire leading-edge knowledge, skills and techniques required by the data science profession
- Become proficient in a broad range of programming languages and software design techniques
- Work with and learn from active researchers in machine learning, high-performance computing and data visualization
- Apply your knowledge and skills to develop solutions in data-intensive sectors where insights can deliver commercial advantage or social benefit
- Access excellent work experience opportunities at nearby Tech City.
The programme is accredited by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered IT Professional and on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.
The MSci in Data Science gives you a strong basis in both computer and data science that will equip you with the skills that are needed by the Data
