To understand the world and develop knowledge of mathematics
Mathematics has a place in almost every industry. It not only impacts real world problems but also solves them as well. Mathematics is constantly evolving and changing. Many inventions that have completely changed civilisation and the world we live in such as data, availability of complex medicine, computers and mobile phones at their heart are described by Mathematics.
If students are excited and interested in Maths a university degree in Mathematics could be for them. This challenging course offers many rewards and can satisfy a wide range of interests and abilities. Studying mathematics develops the imagination, critical thinking and problem solving. It is challenging because students are faced with questions arising from complicated structures and difficult ideas. Maths students learn how to simplify a problem to its fundamental components, how to analyse each one in turn and how to find solutions that explain what really is happening and how to influence it. By asking questions, discussing problems and finding answers students will also strengthen their language and communication skills.
To enhance transferable skills
As well as gaining skills in mathematics, a degree in this field results many other highly desirable transferable skills to employers. Such as:
- problem-solving skills
- perseverance
- analytical skills – in maths there is a lot of focus on absolute proof, which calls for precision and careful reasoning
- communication skills – students might need to explain your reasoning in a written answer, talk through a complex maths problem with a tutor, give a presentation or work in a group with fellow students
- investigating, analysing and interpreting data, finding patterns and drawing conclusions
- information technology
- approaching problems in an analytical and rigorous way, formulating theories and applying them to solve problems
- dealing with abstract concepts
- presenting mathematical arguments and conclusions with accuracy and clarity
- advanced numeracy and analysing large quantities of data
- logical and critical thinking
To improve graduate prospects
A degree in mathematics gives graduates many career options. Mathematics graduates are sought after in many different industries due to their highly developed numerical and logical thinking skills, as well as their ability to analyse challenging problems. If your students pursue a degree in mathematics, they will be opening themselves up to careers in almost every sector allowing them to have an exciting career journey upon graduation. Some mathematics graduates choose careers closely related to their subjects whilst others may choose to go into other careers by using the transferable skills gained in a mathematics degree.
There are far more opportunities than the well-known options of teaching, finance, and banking. They can pursue careers in many different fields and organisations will specifically look for mathematics graduates based on the transferable skills listed above. Below are some of the different paths that mathematics graduates take:
- Advertising & Marketing
- Business & Operational Research
- Civil Service
- Data Science
- Education
- Engineering
- Finance & Banking
- Insurance & Risk
- IT & Computers
- Medicine and Health
- The Natural and Life Sciences
Mathematics degree at City, University of London
There are variations of different mathematics degrees across universities they are not all exactly the same. Here at City we offer three degrees in Mathematics which are as follows:
This course is for students who are passionate about the scope of modern mathematics and excited by its applications in today’s world. A universal subject with no international boundaries, mathematics plays a crucial role in virtually every field of human endeavour.
–BSc (Hons) Mathematics with Finance & Economics
This degree has been developed to help you explore the different aspects of modern mathematics, economic theory and financial structures.
–BSc (Hons) Mathematics & Finance
This course is for students who want a solid grounding in the mathematics discipline, while exploring topics related to finance and actuarial science to open up a huge choice of future career and study options. With an emphasis on applied mathematics, you will be trained in advanced mathematical techniques, economic theory and key financial topics.
Mathematics Foundation Programme
This one-year course is designed to enables those students to spend a year at University consolidating their school-level Mathematics knowledge whilst acclimatising to University-style assessments and exams. Many students study the Mathematics foundation and then move on to studying one of the undergraduate degrees listed above.
On all our mathematics degrees listed above students can apply for the degree with placement and then have the opportunity to complete a professional work placement for 9-15 months between years 2 and 3 of their degree. Students that complete a placement year have been found to be more likely to achieve higher grades, secure a graduate-level job and earn a higher salary. The School of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering has its own dedicated placements team, the Professional Liaison Unit (PLU). While placements are not guaranteed, we do have longstanding relationships with a diverse range of companies. In addition, the PLU provides students with specialised placement support and guidance to increase their chances of securing a relevant placement.
