Research Assistant

Background

The Centre for Compressor Technology is part of the Thermo-Fluids Research Centre (TFRC) in the School of Science and Technology, Department of Engineering. It is globally recognised as a world leading centre of excellence in compressor and expander research, design and development. Analytical and numerical work of the centre is closely associated with the experiments. The facilities of the Centre for Compressor Technology consist of four major test rigs including optical roots blower test rig, compressor performance test rig, test rig for internally geared screw machines and the Expander test rig which is shared with the Turbo-compressor group of TFRC. Other activities of the Centre include, consultancies to industry, short courses on various aspects of compressor technology and training of industrial engineers in compressor design. The Centre also hosts a biennial international conference on compressors and their systems in conjunction with the IMechE.

Responsibilities

The post holder will have the title “Research Associate” (RA) and will be participating in activities related to the project with Rolls Royce and experimental testing of optical positive displacement machines. More specifically, responsibilities will be related to calculation of compressor performance, basic design of a compressor, 3D CAD modelling and generation of manufacturing drawings and liaising with subcontractor who will manufacture a compressor prototype. PDRA will be supporting PhD students, supervise UG students and participate in other projects of the Centre such as testing of optical Roots blower using PLIF and PIV techniques.

Person Specification

The post is offered to Master graduates with industrial experience or Doctoral graduates at the begging of their career for an initial period of two (2) years. It can be further extended subject to the exceptional track record of research, publications and support in teaching and consultancy which is expected from the candidate. For Master students, the post offers to register for doctoral studies as staff candidate.
