Back to Skool- What to Expect if You’re starting University this September

Uncategorized.

You may have noticed that it is September….and this, for many reasons, is exciting and a little terrifying in equal measure. For me, exciting because it’s the start of my final year, the beginning of working on my research project/dissertation and an upcoming block placement that’ll be the last role I have as an SLT student. Also for me, (slightly) terrifying for the same reasons. So whilst I’m coming to the end of my studies, perhaps you’re just about to start. If so, congratulations! If you’re coming to City, WELCOME. And here are some of my top tips for starting out at unversity

  • Grab the lobster by the claws, as my amazing art teacher used to say to us. My understanding of this is something along the lines of GO FOR IT. This will include talking to that person who’s sitting by themselves in the welcome talk, joining that society you think you might want to join and turning up to their taster session and asking questions to academic staff. It’s the perfect time to be proactive, and taking the plunge and being the brave one will pay off.
  • Give yourself time. Time to find your learning style, to get to grips with the timetable and fitting in self-study/social life/life stuff, time to get used to what is expected of you on your course. This is probably the thing I found the hardest about coming back to study and I wish I’d have been a little more patient with myself from the beginning.
  • Access support, from the university, your friends and family and your tutors. It’s what they’re there for. And also don’t wait until you’re panicking- go with questions and concerns as soon as you have them.
  • Make sure you get ALL the discounts. Student oyster cards/rail cards are invaluable and many places will accept your university ID as proof of student status to get money off products and services. Seek out free or cheap events in the city- there really are hundreds of things to do on a budget.
  • If you’re coming to London, there are so many wonderful things happening for you to take advantage of, and I really recommend doing so. Whether it’s food, music, theatre, sport, crafts or film that you’re into (definitely not an exhaustive list), you can experience and take part in London. Sign up to meetup.com and find people with similar interests, if you don’t want to be by yourself.
  • You can never have too much fabulous stationary.

And, finally, good luck. Keep in the loop about induction events being run by your academic school or department and attend everything, so you’re as informed as possible. You got this.
