Sorting Challenge

What is it?

The Sorting Challenge is a part of a campaign to increase our recycling rates at City. For students, it involves a series of one-off competitions throughout the year that test knowledge on the recycling service. For staff, it involves the creation of a Leader Board that ranks departments by how well they use the bins in their kitchen spaces.

How does it work (Staff)?

Every month all the bins in staff kitchens are randomly audited to see whether they are being used correctly. Each department will be assigned a score out of 100 based on the presence contamination (wrong items) in the bins. (E.g. a plastic bottle in the general waste bin or a banana peel in the dry recycling bin). Photos of the bins will also be taken.

Every department will start off with a score of 100. For every type of wrong item (contamination) found by the auditors in each of the bins, 5 points will be deducted. The more contamination there is, the more points are deducted. After each round of audits a Leader Board will be published here on the blog and also shared through our monthly newsletter, The Point. Leader Boards for buildings and sites will also be available.
