Summer enhancement funds a photography course!

We support our students to thrive not just survive.

The City Cares summer enhancement fund was a new pot of money for 2019 to support our students to access development related activities over summer. Many students came forward to request funding and we have proudly supported them to access activities that they wouldn’t have been able to consider otherwise. Thank you to our generous donors and alumni who have made these opportunities possible.

A student reflects on lessons learnt following a photography course funded through the summer enhancement fund, hear about his experiences below.

Due to this opportunity, I was able to gain extensive knowledge of something I am very passionate about – photography! Before the workshops, I thought of exposure as light – I was heavily mistaken.

There are three things which require a degree of balance to gain the perfect exposure – ISO, Aperture and shutter speed come together to form The Exposure Triangle.

ISO refers to the sensitivity of film to light – but affects the appearance of digital noise which is equivalent to film grain. In short, higher the ISO, higher the noise (grainer the image).

Larger the aperture refers to the light striking the image sensor and it also gives a shallow depth of field (focus).

Shutter speed is the amount of time that the shutter curtain remains open to let the light pass through and reach the sensor. In short, a shutter speed of 1 second allows 30 times lighter than a shutter speed of 1/30th second so what really shocked me was the shutter speed scale which can range from a crazy 1/4000th second to 30 whole seconds!

After enough time was spent mastering the exposure triangle, we headed out to practice the other important variables in photography; focal length, distance, viewpoint, colour and angles!

Without the workshops – I would have never been able to pictures professionally as the ones below!
