Ruyue (Ruby) Liu
I am a PhD student in the Department of Sociology at City, the University of London, under the supervision of Professor Rosalind Gill and Dr Lia Litosseliti.
My project analyses Chinese social media influencers from a (post)feminism perspective, intending to figure out how the affective and psychic life of females have been shaped in the digital media environment, how has it tangled with neoliberalism. The research is based on Xiaohongshu (also known as “Little red book”), a social media platform in an era of rapid ascendance in China. My research interests include postfeminism, microcelebrity, digital culture in the Chinese context.
Before joining City, I completed a Master of Digital Communication and Culture at the University of Sydney and worked as a correspondent at the mandarin program of special broadcasting service (SBS) in Australia.
