Queer Data Lecture by Kevin Guyan
Last week we had the pleasure of hosting Dr Kevin Guyan for our first in-person event this term. Kevin delivered an extremely generative talk around his new book “Queer Data: Using Gender, Sex and Sexuality Data for Action” (Bloomsbury Academic) which looks at queer data (data relating to gender, sex, sexual orientation and trans identity/history). Here, Dr. Guyan highlighted how current UK data practices reflect an incomplete account of LGBTQ lives, problematising the ways data biases are used to delegitimise the everyday experiences of queer people. Guyan outlined the need for greater knowledge about queer identities, and how this is instrumental for informing decisions about resource allocation, changes to legislation, access to services, representation and visibility for LBGTQI+ communities. We’d like to thank Kevin for his fantastic contribution and for joining us at the GSRC. Read more about Kevin’s work here.
