Visiting Lecturer, Department of Sociology, ESRC funded PhD, University of Sussex. I am a lawyer, looking at the intersection of coercive control (domestic abuse) and the criminal law. My monograph ‘Coercive Control and the Criminal Law’ is being published by Routledge next year, but I am currently busy with the passage of the Domestic Abuse Bill through parliament – and am running a campaign together with policy teams at Sussex and in the voluntary sector to amend the law on coercive control so survivors are better protected. I am also working on a piece for a special edition of Feminist Legal Studies on domestic abuse that is sexual abuse – establishing the boundaries between consensual ‘rough sex’ and sexual violation in the context of an intimate relationship, and am finishing work on an article exploring the difficulties with the way in which the criminal law seeks to protect victims who are trying to leave an abusive relationship.
