Researchers Development Day Report
Developing and disseminating your research
Friday 4th May 2012
On Friday 4th May 2012 the Learning Development Centre held the second of this year’s Researchers’ Development Days. This one day conference targeted researchers studying and working at City University London, aiming to help them develop new skills and providing them with the opportunity to network with colleagues from across the University.
The day consisted of four lots of three concurrent sessions, each lasting fifty minutes. Each session was run by a guest speaker from within the University and covered a range of topics aimed at helping delegates develop their research practice. The day began with a plenary session given by Professor Jo Wood, looking at the work for which he won the Spotlight on Research prize. The closing session was a panel discussion which considered the question ‘in an academically excellent university, how does research inform teaching?’
Over twenty members of staff presented at this event and it was attended by nearly one hundred people from across the University. Delegates hailed from every School and represented a wide range of disciplines. A selection of presentations from the day can be found on our Slideshare page. The event was a great success and we would like to thank everyone who contributed to make it a really interesting day.

The event will begin with a welcome from Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor David Bolton, and the day will culminate in the awarding of prizes for best poster and best presentation. There will be networking opportunities throughout the day.

iMovie @ the MILL: Quick & Shiny – Making movies in a moment (or an afternoon)!
Last Friday (19.05.12) we ran our first session of iMovie @ the MILL (The Media and Innovation Learning Lab). The session was aimed to promote video making for educators, students and researchers, demonstrating simple and fast methods with which to create effective multimedia resources for a variety of purposes.
The session began with some Top Tips on what to keep in mind when filming your video and then followed with a demonstration of different multimedia equipment. We have some fantastic new lightweight video cameras, iPads and Macs available for staff at the university to use.
Equipment can be loaned from the MILL (E201), just email video@city.ac.uk for more info and to book.
During the afternoon we guided attendees in creating a short ‘talking head’ video, shot in our TV studio, which we then uploaded onto the Macs in the MILL. Using the iMovie software installed on our Macs. Attendees were then able to edit their videos and add in a few special effects, such as title pages, zooms and additional images and sound. By the end of the day everyone had uploaded all the videos onto YouTube demonstrating how they can be easily shared and either embedded or linked to websites or other areas such as Moodle.
Suitable for beginners, the session enables staff to use the video kit independently or in the Media and Innovation Learning Lab (MILL). It will be running again in the near future. Our next slot if fully booked but keep an eye on the LDC blog for more details or email video@city.ac.uk to register your interest.
VideoTip: Using iMovie allows you to easily record audio and video straight into the software – great for quick assessment feedback.
