Invitation to LEaD Launch event – Tuesday 3rd June

To celebrate the creation of LEaD and as a pre-conference warm-up,  we are holding a launch event at City University London on the evening of Tuesday 3rd June 2014.

This event will be a chance to find out about the sphere of activity of the new department and to meet our staff. It will also showcase the innovative projects that our teams are involved in and give an insight into the exciting collaborations set for the future.

The launch will also be a chance to celebrate the achievements of City University Staff. Professor Paul Curran will be presenting a University Education Excellence award to one outstanding member of each School for their achievements in education.   Staff receiving Postgraduate Certificates in Academic Practice will also be celebrated along with those receiving a Learning Development Fellowship.

The event is scheduled to take place in the Level 1 Refectory – University Building

5pm – 7pm Tuesday 3rd June

There will be plenty of wine and nibbles available – Look out for invites in your inbox soon!

4th Annual Postgraduate Symposium

Last Wednesday (26th March) saw LEaD in conjunction with The Graduate School run its most successful Research Symposium to date with nearly 100 doctoral students and staff in attendance.

The focus of 2014 symposium was on the presentation of student’s research methodology and the tools they plan to use or a reflection on those they had used with the benefits and limitations.

The event saw 30 students presenting details of their research. Twenty one students gave a 15 minute paper and nine displayed a poster. Delegates were asked to give feedback on all the sessions they attended and all the posters they viewed. This feedback was then used to award prizes of funding towards a conference for the three best papers and posters.

The event gave those presenting an opportunity to gain valuable experience and feedback and those attending an opportunity to see the breadth and variety of research taking place at City University London.

“The talks were very good and engaging, and it was nice to see such talent on display”

A programme and book of abstracts from the day is available on Google here

Learning Enhancement & Development are looking at future educational technology developments and we are looking for input from City University London staff. Tell us about your experience of using educational technology and what enhancements you would like to see in the future by completing the staff educational technology survey.

It is important that you complete this survey for us to gain accurate feedback from academics and administrators to ensure the requirements for any change are driven by those that use educational technology to support teaching at City.

This survey will take a maximum of 20 minutes to complete. If you don’t use specific technologies online or in a face to face teaching environment you will be able to skip certain sections reducing the amount of time required to complete the survey.

If you would like to be entered into a draw to win a £50 Amazon voucher please provide your staff email at the end of the survey. The answer to this question will not be included in the data analysis.

We would look forward to hearing your feedback and we will publish the results on this blog which is accessible to all staff and students.

Academic Learning Support (ALS)

The Academic Learning Support (ALS) team has recently expanded: Richard Knott and Sally Thorpe were joined in November 2013 by Emma Davenport and David Shah.LDP

This term, the team has delivered a broad programme of university-wide academic skills workshops, covering assignment skills, dissertations, critical thinking, revision techniques and more.  Feedback gathered from students attending these sessions indicates that they highly value this kind of guidance, but a full analysis of the feedback will be presented at the LEaD Launch and the Learning at City conference in June.

Through one-to-one tutorials, the ALS team has supported students from every school, from first year undergraduates to doctoral candidates.  In addition, the team works with school staff to embed academic skills development into course programmes.  If you feel this type of provision would benefit your students, the ALS team would be pleased to hear from you. Cass Showcase – LEaD exhibition

As in previous years, the T&L team at Cass is organising a showcase with the purpose of disseminating good practices and, in general, ideas on the present and future of education. This year, the focus will be on teaching excellence, and the showcase will see presentations from colleagues from Cass and also from other Schools at City.

In addition to the traditional presentation sessions, the showcase will also have a “poster” session, which consists of an exhibition from Learning Enhancement and Development (LEaD). This will therefore be an opportunity to also familiarise yourselves with what  LEaD can do for Cass.

Wednesday 7 May – 11am to 5pm (room 3002 at Cass)

If you’d like to attend, please book a ticket using the online system.
