Different types of questions can be used at the end of a tutorial to assess whether learning outcomes have been met, summarise and synthesise learning from the session, but also to encourage deeper, critical thinking and discussion to extend it. They can also be used to link the session to the next tutorial or lecture.
Different types of response you can elicit during a recap activity:
- evidence
- clarification
- explanation
- linking and extending
- hypothetical
- cause and effect
- summary and synthesis
Questions can take the form of a MCQ (e.g. to test factual knowledge in a quick manner), short or long answers. It can be done on paper or using polling software such as Poll Everywhere (supported at City), which has the benefit of providing instant feedback.
Depending on the objectives and time available, quizzes can be completed individually, in pair or in group and may include discussion and negotiation.
Online synchronous version
Use Poll Everywhere to ask students some questions on the content covered in the session or previous course content.
Online asynchronous version
Use a Moodle quiz to allow students to apply and review on their knowledge of content covered in the course to date.
