Book recommendation: The Child-Parent Caregiving Relationship in Later Life

Dr Bethany Morgan Brett has recently published her latest book The Child-Parent Caregiving Relationship in Later Life which presents an intimate, sensitive and poignant account of the challenges faced by adult children when making difficult decisions about care for and with their ageing parents in later life

Based upon 15 years of research, the book explores the practical, emotional and physical effects that witnessing the ageing and death of parents has on those in late midlife and how these relationships are negotiated during this phase of the life course. The research highlights the social expectations and cultural expectations surrounding decisions of care, as well as the emotional complexity of decision making and the impact this can have on the child-parent relationship.

Bethany used a psychosocial approach to understand the experience of having a parent transition to care and the ambiguous feelings that these decisions evoke.

Dr Bethany Morgan Brett is a Research Fellow for My Home Life England, based at City University of London. My Home Life England works to promote positive practice and improve the quality of life for those living, visiting and working in care homes and other care settings.
