A message from City St George’s President: City, University of London and St George’s, University of London merge

Dear Alumni, Photo of President Professor Sir Anthony Finkelstein.

I am delighted to confirm that as of today, City, University of London has formally merged with St George’s, University of London. We are now one institution – City St George’s, University of London. Welcome to your new University!

The merger means that we are now one of the largest higher education destinations for London students, and a powerful multi-faculty institution with a distinctive focus on professional education and research at the frontier of practice.

With the City St George’s merger, we have signalled our ambition across, and beyond, the sector. We have become a large-scale health educator with an established and prestigious medical school, a strong translational research portfolio underpinned by biomedical sciences, and an outstanding presence in allied health. We have opened important inter-disciplinary and cross-disciplinary opportunities. We have reinforced our social mission, taken a unique position within London higher education, and placed ourselves alongside the large London biomedical research concentrations. We are well positioned to address the needs of the National Health Service (NHS) long-term workforce plan.

Our embedding within St George’s hospital, the largest in London, and amongst the largest in the UK, gives us unique reach, access to a key community, and a unitary treatment centre – a critical asset for our science and for addressing current and future health challenges. We extend our NHS partnerships and our opportunities for close clinical and educational engagements.

Colleagues and students from St George’s will join City’s School of Health & Psychological Sciences, to form a new integrated School of Health & Medical Sciences. The new School will be launched in 2025. For the foreseeable future, activities across health and medicine will continue at their current locations, across our Clerkenwell and Tooting (St George’s) sites. This means that there are no changes for students of either City’s School of Health and Psychological Sciences, or St George’s, University of London, i.e. their studies will be exclusively located at either Clerkenwell or Tooting respectively, as previously.

I am proud to be the President of City St George’s, University of London. We begin operating as a combined institution from today, although full integration will take us some time to achieve.

You will start to see our new logo in use internally as we move through the rebranding process. The external launch of the new brand will take place in March 2025 and will feature a range of activities and events to mark this very significant step in City’s development. We will let you know about the launch plans nearer the time, and I hope that you will join us in the celebrations.

I want to reassure you that although you are now automatically a member of the City St George’s, University of London alumni network and community, our commitment to creating high-value alumni services and engagement opportunities for you will remain the same. As our community and resources grow, so will tangible benefits for our students and alumni.

I will ensure that you remain fully informed about future developments. Enjoy the summer, and we look forward to welcoming you to City St George’s – on campus or at an alumni event near you – soon.
