It has been an exciting and historic summer at your University – we have become City St George’s, University of London, one of the largest higher education destinations for London students, and a powerful multi-faculty institution with a distinctive focus on professional education and research at the frontier of practice. I am proud to be the first President of City St George’s, and I am grateful to all members of our growing community for their hard work, advocacy and support without which this milestone development could not have been achieved.
An exciting summer indeed – many of you will have noted the very substantial improvements in our league table position, most recently in The Guardian University Guide 2025 earlier this month. Your University has made good progress moving up 23 places to 38th in the UK. This is the most significant improvement in rank of any university in the top 50.
This follows the large jump in our National Student Survey (NSS) scores. The Guardian’s methodology places particular emphasis on student satisfaction in relation to the quality of teaching and feedback they experienced during their course. I would also note our success in the Daily Mail University Guide 2025. Legacy St George’s is ranked 12th in the UK, up 10 places. Legacy City is ranked 27th, up seven places.
The Daily Mail University Guide 2025 also featured a series of judged awards. City St George’s, as a combined institution, was named University of the Year for Graduate Jobs and runner-up for the overall University of the Year Award. I am proud of this recognition which highlights some of the shared strengths that brought City St George’s together.
I hope that this evident success will give you continued confidence in your University. Our profile and capability have never been higher, we have put substantial space between ourselves and key London ‘competitors’ demonstrating the value students attach to our distinctive practice and professional focus. All this before we even capitalise on the transformational changes that are now underway and taken advantage of the enhanced platform created by the merger. More to come.
I close with a warm welcome to the Class of 2024, our new alumni who graduated in July. Congratulations on your degree and my very best wishes for success in your chosen career paths! I am proud of the achievements of our alumni the world over. You are now a member of this powerful network of opportunity and support. I invite you to be an active part of it.
