International Politics Photo Contest Winner – Angela Mancao!

We are very pleased to announce the winners of the first International Politics Photo Contest. Our first winner is Angela Mancao! We asked Angela to share a bit about the context of her photograph.

“In 2013, typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest recorded typhoons in history, hit the Philippines. The relief operations on the ground were heavily affected, that the whole country had to unite in efforts to access islands that had zero radio contact since the typhoon hit the country. I joined a team of doctors who offered first-hand relief, and the images I saw then still stay with me today. We were led to this small alleyway where the only source of light was the sun, and at that moment, it chose to shine on a Philippine flag that residents put up as a call for help.”

About the photo:
“Can we choose where the light shines? Thousands of families were left with no food and water while lingering on their roof-less homes. The Philippine flag seemed like the most appropriate symbol of the state at that moment. The state is a fundamental unit of society. We may have our own beliefs, but the state stands as a symbol of common ground for its people. Our politics may divide us, but the state can be the light. To continually divide or unite? – is the question.”
