Global Governance During Unprecedented Global Challenges
The Democratic Education Network (DEN), alongside the University of Westminster, are delighted to invite you and your students to our 2021 Conference. The conference will take place on the 11th and 12th of June (online) with the title: ‘Global Governance During Unprecedented Global Challenges’.
The conference brings together students from undergraduate, postgraduate, and college levels to discuss a range of contemporary issues. Students are welcomed to write and submit papers which will be organised into panels for them to present on the day. We hope to have papers ranging from topics like gender and geopolitics, human rights and Hong Kong, and of course, the implications of the pandemic. After the paper has been presented it will be sent to a group of DEN Westminster academics and students who will be tasked with editing it and publishing it in a book to be released in May 2022. Alternatively, students are welcome to write a brief abstract (roughly 250 words) outlining the subject of their research and present it at the conference without a paper; the paper can be written in the commencing weeks and emailed to the DEN team after the conference. Please see the Call for Papers and promotional poster attached for more information.
If students wish to submit a paper or abstract, they can send it to denconference2021@gmail.com. The deadline is May 7th, but late submissions may be accepted.
Rise in Banking 2021
RISE in Banking is a programme, where students from different ethnic minority backgrounds are given a chance to spend some time learning about the world of Banking and Financial Markets at Lloyds. Given the current restrictions in the UK this programme has been designed to be delivered in a virtual setting of two 1-hour sessions per week.
It includes an opportunity for Product Exposure, Skill development, and networking. Click HERE for details.

City Doctoral College Festival of Research

Call for submissions!
The Doctoral College is pleased to host our first inaugural Festival of Research. We are now welcoming submissions from academics and researchers to participate in this event, along with colleagues across the institution providing research expertise and research.
This is a high-profile way of sharing your work with new audiences, and a great opportunity to explore new project and cross-disciplinary opportunities.
Sessions will be held each day with the first session available from 11am. The last session of the day will finish no later than 3pm. In line with current Government guidance, the event will be held online with sessions delivered via Zoom.

The Recourse to the (Criminal) Law: Understanding Intersecting Inequalities and Violence

The Violence and Society Centre, City, University of London warmly invites you to join us for the following webinar.
The development of law as a response to violence has long been important. Yet this generates further troubles. Responses to violence require analyses of intersecting inequalities, such as gender, immigration status, ethnicity/race, and age, with such intersections becoming the focus of debate for policy making in the context of the Domestic Abuse Bill, now in its final stages of progress.
The many attempts at amendment have raised important questions including the implications of legislative changes for domestic violence and abuse. What are the policy and theoretical issues at stake? How are concepts of ‘gender’ and ‘abuse’ or ‘violence’ approached? What does the recourse to law as a strategy for responding to domestic violence and abuse achieve? And what protections does this legislative change provide for migrant and minoritized women?

This event is hosted by the Violence and Society Centre, City, University of London and will be Chaired by Professor Sylvia Walby (Professor of Sociology, City, University of London).
