Meet our Research Team
The project is a collaboration between the Centre for Food Policy, City, University of London, University of Sheffield, University of Greenwich and University of Kent and WRAP.
Christian Reynolds
Principal Investigator – City University
Christian provides intellectual oversight to the whole project and has ultimate responsibility for the outputs, dissemination and impact of the study. He is an expert in modelling the environmental, social, and economic impacts of waste, plastics, and sustainable systems.
Lenny Koh
Co-Investigator – Sheffield University
Lenny is the Founder and Director of the Centre for Energy, Environment & Sustainability (CEES), Advanced Resource Efficiency Centre (AREC), and Logistics & Supply Chain Management (LSCM) Research Centre at The University of Sheffield. Using inter-disciplinary approaches, crossing supply chain management, information systems, energy, engineering, social sciences and science disciplines, her work contributes to the understanding and resolution of complex supply chain problems, which are caused by climate change and uncertainty.
Debbie Rees
Co-Investigator – University of Greenwich
Debbie is a Professor of Plant Physiology at the Natural Resources Institute, University of Greenwich. Her remit covers the Produce Quality Centre which provides the widest range of expertise and the most extensive
facilities for controlled environment storage research on perishable commodities in the UK –
including testing for fruit/vegetable interactions with packaging.
Cansu Kandemir
Co-Investigator- University of Sheffield
Cansu Kandemir is the Technical Fellow for Manufacturing Intelligence Team at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC), The University of Sheffield. She has been involved in numerous projects of optimising systems through Discrete Event Simulation modelling. She was the main developer of a pilot version of the HHSM.
Lori Fisher
Co-investigator – University of Kent
Lori is specialist in applied post-harvest plant physiology, with a focus on improving shelf life, storage and packaging of fresh produce. Also, investigating the impact of edible films and coatings as alternatives to plastic, as well as carrying out investigations into modified atmosphere packaging of leaf crops.
Tom Quested
Co-Investigator – WRAP
Tom works on food waste and strategy at WRAP. His research focuses on food waste: how much is wasted, why it gets wasted and what can be done to prevent it being wasted. He has pioneered novel methods to explore wasted food in the home, applying techniques from a range of disciplines, including operational research, statistics and the social sciences e.g. using discrete event simulation to explore food wasted in the home.
Virginia Martin Torrejon
Co-Investigator – City University
Virginia has a Ph.D.in Mechanical Engineering, her background includes Agriculture Engineering and Food Technology. Virginia has contributed to projects focused on the development of bio-based foams and films for packaging and absorbent products. Her work on the HHSM has focused upon modelling the effects of different parametres on different food products in relation to their plastic and food waste trade-offs.
Jack Pickering
Co-Investigator – University of Sheffield
Jack specialises in qualitative social research and ethnographic methods, and his research interests include: food systems/consumption, consumer issues/consumer cultures, and changing retail spaces. For the HHSM he undertook observational research into everyday-practices associated with and connected to food and packaging e.g., shopping, unpacking, storing, cleaning and/or cooking of the products of interest as negotiated by the public.
Rachel Devine
Co-Investigator – WRAP
Rachel Devine is a Lead Analyst at WRAP and has an in-depth knowledge of food waste in the supply chain and households. She co-authored a peer reviewed publication on simulating food through the home using WRAP’s Household Simulation Model.
Sarah Greenwood
Co-Investigator – University of Sheffield
Sarah is a sustainable packaging and plastics consultant with over 25 years’ experience working in industry. She holds degrees in Physics and Polymer Science and has held technical roles at major brands and retailers in all aspects of the packaging supply chain. This included looking into the use of bio-plastics and packaging designed to extend product shelf-life for a major retailer. Within HHSM she provides technical expertise in both current and future packaging designs for food. Sarah co-leads the project Many Happy Returns: Enabling reusable packaging systems.
Ramzi Fayad
Co-Investigator – University of Leeds
Ramzi has a PhD in Manufacturing Engineering and Operations Management from the Nottingham University. He is an expert in Discrete Event Simulation and other forms of simulation for operations research. He constructed the logic flow for the Household Simulation Model and performed the early model runs, greatly expanding the functionality of this version of the model in comparison to previous versions.
Rui Guo (Gloria)
Co-Investigator – University of Sheffield
Gloria has a Ph.D. Degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and is currently a postdoctoral research associate in the Management School in University of Sheffield (MSUS). Her main research interests are e-waste management, food waste management, circular economy and supply chain. Her work has focused on integrating Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology with insights derived from a spectrum of interventions simulated within the Household Simulation Model (HHSM).
