Roger Jowell memorial lecture 2021

The annual lecture held in memory of European Social Survey (ESS) co-founder, Sir Roger Jowell, will be held both as an in-person event and broadcast online on Tuesday 28 September.

Paul Johnson (The Institute for Fiscal Studies) will deliver the Sir Roger Jowell Memorial Lecture 2021: Economic and social challenges after COVID at City, University of London (UK) from 6pm (UTC+1).

The event will also be live streamed online via Zoom Webinar from 6.30pm (UTC+1).

This year’s lecture will assess how inequalities in education and wealth, and between regions, ethnic minorities and generations, have been affected by the Coronavirus pandemic.

Paul Johnson will examine the challenges for policy created by these inequalities, not least the ongoing long-term effects of ultra-low interest rates. He will also outline the fiscal challenges facing governments looking to deal with these consequences.

The event will be chaired by the new President of City, University of London, Professor Anthony Finkelstein.

Sir Roger Jowell, CBE (26 March 1942 – 25 December 2011), was an outstanding British academic and social statistician who co-founded the ESS alongside Max Kaase.

Sir Roger also founded the Social and Community Planning Research (SCPR) – now NatCen Social Research – and made a major contribution to the development of robust comparative research through the International Social Survey Programme.

This is the eighth annual lecture in memory of our co-founder. Previous speakers have included: Sir Andrew Dilnot (Social statistics and public policy); Professor John Curtice (Scottish independence referendum); Professor Anne Johnson (National Surveys of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles), Professor Jane Green (British Elections Study) and Sir Michael Marmot (Institute of Health Equity, UCL).

Organised by City, University of LondonNatCen Social Research and the Social Research Association, the 2021 lecture will be held simultaneously in the university’s Oliver Thompson Lecture Theatre (with a reduced COVID safe capacity of up to 181 attendees) and on Zoom Webinar.

Doors will open for the in-person event at 6pm on Tuesday 28 September.

Attendees are asked to conduct a Coronavirus lateral flow test before the event and are asked not to attend if they test positive or are feeing unwell. A drinks reception will follow the lecture.

The lecture will be broadcast on Zoom Webinar from 6.30pm.
