New Round 10 data release
The third edition of data and documentation for European Social Survey (ESS) Round 10 was published today (Thursday 11 May 2023).
This latest release includes weighted data from an additional five participating countries: Belgium, Ireland, Israel, Latvia and the United Kingdom.
It means that data from 30 countries who took part in Round 10 (2020-22) is now available in an integrated file via the ESS Data Portal.
As a result of measures implemented nationally to help prevent the spread of Coronavirus, countries were allowed to conduct the survey using self-completion modes for the first time.
Eight of the 30 countries conducted fieldwork in this way: Austria, Germany, Israel, Latvia, Poland, Serbia, Spain and Sweden.
The remaining countries – Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Montenegro, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland and the United Kingdom – collected data in line with previous rounds, using face-to-face interviews.
Self-completion data from Cyprus is currently available as a country-specific file without weights. This data will be added to the integrated file once weights can be produced.
It is also worth noting that, due to the pandemic, our fieldwork period was extended with interviews conducted from September 2020 until August 2022.
As a result of data being collected using different modes over a longer period than in previous rounds, please refer to our short briefing: Notes on ESS Round 10 data release.
Our Round 10 survey included our core questionnaire, fielded in every round.
It also included two rotating modules: Europeans’ understandings and evaluations of democracy and Digital social contacts in work and family life.
Additionally, a special COVID-19 module was fielded by countries on a voluntary basis.
It was announced in May 2022 that our General Assembly has endorsed a plan to move data collection from face-to-face interviews to a ‘self-completion’ design involving both web and paper self-completion questionnaires in future.
Subsequently, four mode-switch advisers were appointed in November 2022 to assist with the planned switch in data collection mode.
This release of Round 10 data – Edition 3.0 – is only available via our Data Portal. Registered users who accessed our data in previous rounds directly through our website may need to re-register.
