Cultural policy-makers and creative workers publicly present their Report for 2005 UNESCO Convention

On Sept. 8th, public officials, artists and creative workers gathered in Kigali (Rwanda) to finalise the selection of cultural policies and measures showcased in the first Quadriennale Periodic Report to be submitted by Rwandan authorities, as signatory party to the UNESCO Convention 2005 (On the Promotion and Protection of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions).

Jenny Mbaye, as a member of the pool of Experts for the 2005 Convention, was one of the two international experts (with Canadian Charles Vallerand) selected by the Rwandan government to accompany, assist and support the National team in charge of the production and realisation of the Report, which will guide the Ministry of Sports and Culture as a benchmarking tool and contribute towards future policy making by providing stastical eveidence and innovative examples of measures and experiences.

The public presentation to the civil society that included a press conference and a networking reception, is the result of a three-months work undergone by the National Team, whose members previously participated in a multi-stakeholders consultation meeting and a three-days workshop in May 2016, organized by UNESCO and the Ministry of Sports and Culture and fundedby the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) as part of a policy monitoring project entitled: ‘Enhancing fundamental freedoms through the promotion of the diversity of cultural expressions in Rwanda’.

Rwanda’s periodic report will be examined by the Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions in December 2016 in Paris, and also contribute towards the next edition of UNESCO’s Global Report on the implementation of the 2005 Convention, to be published in December 2017.
