Memory, Power and Knowledge in African Music and Beyond
Jenny Mbaye took part in the conference ‘Memory, Power and Knowledge in African Music and Beyond’ co-organised by Hildesheim University (Centre for World Music), University of Cape Coast (Ghana), Maiduguri University (Nigeria), and Mainz University (African Music Archive) and hosted by the Dow Countries Music Academy (Zanzibar).
During four days (June 10th-14th), the event gathered ethnomusicologists, anthropologists, sociologists, historians, media studies scholars and geographers from all over the world to discuss and reflect on these concepts and share experiences and perspectives from throughout the African continent.
Jenny presented a paper on ‘World Music 2.0: Hip Hop Galsen and the ‘Transformer’ generation’, which explored the interesections between formal and informal cultural policy-making emerging in the Senegalese context of an urban popular music, namely Hip Hop.
