‘girl-powering’ of development and humanitarian discourses. New article by Ros.

Ros has just published an article in Feminist Review that looks at the ‘girl-powering’ of development and humanitarian discourses. Co-authored with Ofra Koffman (LSE) the article examines the ‘Girl Effect’ through a feminist and postcolonial lens looking at the way young women in the Global South and North are hailed through neoliberal discourses of choice and agency which erase structural inequalities. The article takes it’s title from Nike’s poster which asserts ‘The revolution will be led by a 12 year old girl’. Feminist Review (2013) 105, 83–102. doi:10.1057/fr.2013.16
Ros and Ofra have a three year collaboration, based around Ofra’s successful Leverhulme fellowship for which Ros was mentor whilst at Kings College. They are currently writing an article for Continuum on the rise of what they call ‘selfie humanitarianism’
