Academics
Howden/Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Compressor Technology
Professor Kovacevic is the director of the Centre for Compressor Technology, constitutive part of the large Thermo-Fluids Research Centre and City, University of London. His research is focused on fundamental and applied issues related to compressor technology including high fidelity modelling, analysis, design and application of twin screw machines. Among many projects with industry he is currently leading the cutting edge research to transform the oil-free compression technology in collaboration with Howden Compressors Ltd, a major UK compressor manufacturer and Royal Academy of Engineering. The main educational interest of Professor Kovacevic is developing design excellence of engineering undergraduate and postgraduate students and linking these with industrial research.
Prof Kovacevic is Fellow of IMechE (FIMeche), Board member of the Fluid Machinery Group, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Manufacture and Commerce (FRSA), Co-Editor in Chief of the Journal of Process Mechanical Engineering, Non-Executive Technical Expert in Megger etc.

Research Fellow
Dr Sham Rane graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pune, India. He then worked as a manufacturing engineer at Forbes Marshall India Pvt. Ltd. He continued his education at Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in the Mechanical Engineering department with specialization in Design of Mechanical Equipment. In 2008, Dr Rane joined the computational fluid dynamics department of ANSYS FLUENT India Ltd.
In 2011, he moved to London and joined City University’s Centre for Compressor Technology for his PhD research. Here he works extensively on deforming grid generation for twin screw compressors. He investigates non-classical rotor designs like variable lead and variable profile using CFD analysis. In 2014, Dr Rane completed his thesis and was appointed as a Research Fellow at the centre to carry further developments in CFD analysis in positive displacement machines. Recently he has been working on analysis of multiphase flows in twin screw compressors such as water spray and oil injected designs. He has also been working on extension of the CFD modelling to oil injected and ORC application rotary vane compressors and expanders.

Lecturer in Aerospace Propulsion
Juan Guzman-Inigo works as a Lecturer in the Department of Engineering at City University of London. Before joining City in 2022, he was a Research Associate at Imperial College London and the University of Cambridge. He obtained a Ph.D. from the Ecole Polytechnique Paris/ONERA in 2015, where he developed data-based techniques for the estimation and control of fluid flows.
Juan Guzman's research focuses on sound and fluid mechanics and is aimed at reducing the noise of aircraft, wind turbines, and compressors among others. He is interested in understanding the physical mechanisms involved in the generation of sound and the development of novel techniques to reduce it. A new direction of his research is the use of Reinforcement Learning (RL) to reduce flow-induced noise and vibrations.
