Ban sexist advertising?

In June 2016 London Mayor Sadiq Khan announced his intention to ban ‘body shaming’ adverts from all Transport for London sites. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-36516378

The proposal came in the wake of the protests last year over Protein World’s campaign: “Are you beach body ready?” Khan said: “Nobody should feel pressurised, while they travel on the Tube or bus, into unrealistic expectations surrounding their bodies and I want to send a clear message to the advertising industry about this.” But how effective will this ban be? Will it provoke a backlash? Does it herald a shift in policy towards advertising? Rosalind Gill, a gender and media expert, will be giving evidence on these questions and talking about gender stereotyping and body image more broadly, at a seminar at the Advertising Standards Authority next week. The ASA is running a public consultation process on gender in advertising and inviting submissions before the end of June 2016. Send comments to gender@asa.org.uk
