Tips on Applying for a Tier 4 Visa

With summer approaching, now is a good time to start thinking about visa applications. If you are an international student who requires a Tier 4 visa in order to study in the UK, we strongly recommend that you read the City University guidance. Please note that only applicants whose offer is unconditional can apply for a CAS (Certificate of Acceptance for Studies), although it is never too early to start preparing for your visa application, especially if your offer is still conditional.

To find out if you require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK, please check here.

We have written a step-by-step guide to help you understand the process of requesting a CAS – we hope you find it useful.

The City University website also has a lot of information on how to apply for a visa. It is very important that you read the guidance carefully, particularly the section on what documents are needed and the funds you are required to show.

Finally, once you have received your CAS and have your documents and funds in place, please do not delay your visa application. For a rough estimate of how long it may take for a decision to be made on your visa application please visit the Home Office website. Please note that many visa application centres become very busy over the summer period.

Please feel free to contact our International Student Advice Team on visaadvice@city.ac.uk if you have any questions or concerns about your particular situation.

If you follow our guidance carefully you should enjoy a smoother application experience. Good luck!

How to Upgrade your Offer to Unconditional

As many of our offer-holders will shortly be finishing their undergraduate degree, this post is designed to remind you of how you can upgrade your conditional offer to unconditional. Once your offer is unconditional you will be able to apply for a Tier 4 visa (if applicable) and you will be one step closer to registering at Cass Business School and starting the exciting year ahead!

Any applicant who requires a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK should provide all requested documents and upgrade their offer by no later than 1 August 2014. It is therefore important that you send the necessary documents to us as soon as they become available. If you do not know when your final results will be out, it may be worth checking with your institution and informing your Admissions Officer if you think you may not be able to provide the documents by this date. It is also a good idea to start reading through our visa application guidance now, so that you can be prepared for the application process when your offer is upgraded to unconditional.

Degree Transcript/Certificate

If your offer is conditional upon you completing your current course of study, you will need to send us the hard copy of your final degree transcript by post, confirming the completion of your degree, your final grade and the date your degree was awarded. If all of these details are not confirmed on your transcript of marks then we will also require your degree certificate confirming the award of your degree. If you are unclear as to which document to provide, please contact your Admissions Officer. The transcript (and certificate, if applicable) should either be an original or certified version. A certified version must be stamped and certified as a true copy of the original document by either your university, a government official or a notary, and must display the original stamps and certifying signatures. These documents should be sent by post to your Admissions Officer at the address below (we cannot accept scanned copies):

Specialist Masters Admissions
Cass Business School
106 Bunhill Row
London
EC1Y 8TZ

You may wish to ask your university to send the documents to us directly, as this might be faster than you receiving them and then forwarding them on to us. If you require a Tier 4 visa you should request a transcript to be sent directly to you as well, as you may need it for your visa application.

If you have completed a degree in the People’s Republic of China you must also provide your Chinese Higher Education Qualification Certificate (HEQC) from http://www.chsi.com.cn  confirming your degree award. We can accept these notifications in hard copy or sent as a PDF, but this must be received alongside a posted original or certified degree transcript and graduation certificate in order to formally verify any academic qualification.

IELTS and GMAT

You must also send us proof of meeting any other conditions of your offer (if you have not already done so); for example, meeting our English/GMAT requirements. We are able to verify the results of IELTS and GMAT exams directly with the test supplier so are happy to accept scanned copies of test certificates, as long as these include the Test Report Form code (TRF) for IELTS or your GMAT ID for a GMAT exam. In order to verify a GMAT result you must also arrange with GMAC to make your GMAT result accessible to Cass Business School (Institution Code 2C2-RO-84 – Masters in Science).

References

If we are still pending one or more references, you may wish to follow up the request with your referee(s). The referee can either send their reference to us directly by email from their academic/professional email account, or they can send it by post to the Admissions Officer at the address given above. Please note that references should be confidential and we therefore cannot accept scanned references sent by the applicant. Referees can either use our reference form or can write the reference in their own format on headed paper.

Some offers may include conditions not mentioned above – please check your offer letter and contact your Admissions Officer if you have any queries.

Please remember to include your name and student number with any documents you send us.

If you need your original documents back (with the exception of references, which cannot be returned) please let us know, and provide us with the address to which the documents need to be returned, plus your contact phone number. Alternatively you can pick them up from the Admissions Office during the second week of induction.

We can also accept documents in person at Cass Business School. Please arrange an appointment with your Admissions Officer if you wish to bring a document in.

If you are in any doubt as to which documents you need to provide in order to upgrade your offer, please contact your Admissions Officer.

Good luck with your final results, and we look forward to hearing from you soon!

Online Immigration Clinic Recording

As we progress nearer the start date of the course, it is important for international applicants requiring a Tier 4 visa to start thinking about this stage. To help our offer-holders prepare for the visa process, we recently held an online immigration clinic – thanks to everyone who signed up and posed interesting and useful questions to our Senior International Student Adviser, Lizzie Huckle. The session covers everything from requesting a CAS statement; what documents are required; maintenance funds; when, where and how you can apply for your visa, and much more.

Please find the Online Immigration Clinic Recording here – the recording starts around one minute into the session. You will need speakers or headphones to listen to the presentation.

For further advice on the visa process, please contact our International Student Advice Team on visaadvice@city.ac.uk.

All applications should be made online. Please see our Scholarships page for information on the scholarships available, and to check the eligibility criteria.

The form cannot be saved and returned to, so we strongly recommend that you prepare your essay answers in advance and then copy and paste them into the form. To preview the questions, please see our earlier blog post. Please stick to the character limits or the form will not submit, and ensure that there are no paragraph breaks in your answers.

In the application form you will be asked to select the name of the course you are studying and your country of citizenship. If your combination does not show up any results we regret that you do not fit the eligibility criteria for the scholarships on offer this year; however, you may be eligible for scholarships from external sources. We recommend that you check the availability of scholarships in your country for students studying in the UK, or see some of the links at the bottom of our Scholarships page.

Only applicants who are holding a valid offer on a full-time Masters course at Cass Business School may apply for a scholarship. We do not accept applications from applicants who have not yet been made an offer.

The Real Estate Club Scholarship Applications 2014

For the second year running, the student-led Cass Real Estate Club have worked hard in order to raise funds for a scholarship for students on the MSc Real Estate and MSc Real Estate Investment courses. The scholarship is awarded with funds raised primarily through the highly successful annual Real Estate Conference.

In 2012, £8,000 was raised and was awarded evenly between two highly motivated students requiring financial assistance. The 2013 conference raised £15,000 towards the scholarship fund, which is available to students with an offer on the MSc Real Estate or MSc Real Estate Investment course at Cass Business School who require financial assistance for the 2014/15 academic year.

Please note that the application process for the Cass REC Scholarship is separate from the application procedure for the other scholarships available at Cass Business School. Please see below for details on how to apply.

To be eligible for the scholarship, prospective candidates must prove their need for financial assistance and display outstanding academic credentials. Those with professional experience are also encouraged to apply. Only applicants holding an offer on MSc Real Estate or MSc Real Estate Investment will be considered – we will not accept applications from applicants who have not yet been made an offer.

Value: The £15,000 award will be split between a number of successful candidates.

Criteria

Eligible courses: MSc Real Estate, MSc Real Estate Investment.

Geographical requirements: None.

Academic requirements: Must be able to demonstrate academic excellence.

Financial need: Must be able to demonstrate financial need.

We are pleased to announce that we shall shortly be opening for 2014 intake Scholarship applications. We have been waiting for the final confirmations from our donors, and now our online form is being redesigned for this year’s process. We recommend that you save them in a Word document or similar, and then you can copy and paste into the form when you apply online. You will only submit one application form, which is used for each scholarship you apply for, so if you are eligible to apply for more than one scholarship please bear this in mind when drafting your answers.

1) Please outline your reasons (academic and financial) for applying for this scholarship. (250-1500 characters)

2) What are your career plans for the next five years after completing the Cass Masters degree, and how will a scholarship help you to achieve them? (250-1500 characters)

3) As a recipient of this scholarship, how would you further supplement your living and study expenses in London? (250-1500 characters)

4) Describe a profound event in your life and how it affected you. (250-1500 characters)

Please note that there is a character limit (not word limit), and you must not exceed this. Our form will not accept any line or paragraph breaks, so format your answer to each question as one paragraph.

Please keep an eye on our website for the opening of the Scholarship application form, and let us know if you have any queries!
