90kg Fairtrade rice challenge

, , Leave a comment

In Malawi, a farmer needs to sell 90kg of rice to send his child to high school for a year. Nicha and Lea, two of our student Sustainability Leaders, took on the challenge earlier this term to sell 90kg of Fairtrade rice from Malawi so that we can support a child’s education too!

The 1kg bags cost £3 each, and were sold at the tills of EatC1ty and other cafes around campus. Nicha and Lea also set up a stall on the walkway during Fairtrade Fortnight, visited Cass Business School and sold the bags at our staff Fairtrade break event. Together with the cafes, the girls did an incredible job selling nearly 60 bags of the rice in their first two weeks!

The students are now just 6 bags away from reaching their total! Can you help them out by purchasing a bag? Email ‘Nicha.thanabhusest@cass.city.ac.uk to make an appointment to collect and pay later at City, University of London. Your support will help provide a brighter future for communities in Malawi!

The project was funded by the Sustainability team, along with a number of other student Sustainability Leader initiatives this year. You can find out more about being a Sustainability Leader here, or check out some of the other projects which students have run, like the Beeswax candle-making workshop.
