Fairtrade Fortnight: Choose the World You Want

Choose the World You Want is free festival of online events put on by the Fairtrade Foundation as part of this years Fairtrade Fortnight, running from the 21st February to the 6th March.

Choosing Fairtrade is important as it sets social, economical, and environmental standards for those involved in the supply chain.

To promote the festival the Sustainability Team at City, a certified Fairtrade University, wanted to highlight some of our top picks over the next two weeks. Read what’s coming up and click on the links to get involved!

 

MEET BISMARK AND HUGO: FAIRTRADE FARMERS TAKING ON THE CLIMATE CRISIS
Joining from Ghana is Bismark Kpabitey, a Fairtrade cocoa farmer. He is fresh from delivering powerful speeches at COP26 on sustainable cocoa growing. And dialling in from Peru will be Hugo Guerrero, a Fairtrade coffee farmer who is doing amazing work sharing organic farming techniques with his whole community.

FAIRTRADE LONDON HISTORY WALK

Join us on a history walk like no other. We will follow the story of three important commodities – coffee, tea and sugar – whose history is intertwined with London’s past, present and future as a global trading centre. The transatlantic slave trade is a central part of the story, and links to the modern day inequalities that blight the trade in tropical commodities and are finally begining to be tackled by Fairtrade supply chains.

When: Friday 25th February. Meet at 2:50pm by the big ship in Hays Galleria near London Bridge.

EDUCATION FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE

Join Patron Allegra McEvedy MBE to explore the role of the education sector in building a more just, sustainable world. Hear from educators and activists including: Phoebe L. Hanson from the Teach the Future campaign; Jennifer Buchan, Primary Teacher, Hutchesons’ Grammar School; and Professor Douglas Bourn, Director of the UCL Development Education Research Centre. Harriet Lamb CBE, CEO of sustainable energy charity Ashden and former CEO of the Fairtrade Foundation, will also join the panel.
