Underlying values
Our vision is for City University, School of Health Sciences to be a centre of excellence for health care provision that will support and educate health care professionals to provide skilled, dignified and compassionate care that focuses on the unique needs of patients and their families or carers.
Our Health Professionals are guided by the following core values:
Patients, families and carers •We aim to ensure that the priorities and concerns of patients, their families and carers guide the delivery of our health care education
The Health Care Team •We are committed to fostering an environment that promotes respect, positive communication and collaboration with patients, their families and the wider healthcare team
The Community •We are dedicated to serving all who come to us for care or health care education by focusing on their unique and diverse needs and by engaging with them on all aspects of what matters to them
Life-long learning •We are committed to working in partnership with all students and staff in the School of Health Sciences and our partner organisations to create a passion for and a culture of life-long learning that integrates evidence-based practice, research and development
Within the School of Health Sciences, service user and carer involvement in education is underpinned by a set of values that includes:
- A commitment to relationship-centred care, where health professionals and students value and attend to the relationships that form the context of care, including those among and between service users and carers, their local communities, and other healthcare workers. This includes relationships within the educational setting.
- A belief in the value of the Senses Framework (Nolan et al 2006) as a potential framework for practice. Studies suggest that in the best care environments all participants experience a sense of:
-
Security – to feel safe
-
Belonging – to feel part of things
-
Continuity – to experience links and connection
-
Purpose – to have a goal(s) to aspire to
-
Achievement – to make progress towards these goal
-
Significance – to feel that you matter as a person
- The safety, health and wellbeing of service users and carers (and students) is paramount. Service users and their carers may expect to be adequately prepared for and appropriately debriefed from any educational role they undertake.
- The needs, views and preferences of service users and their carers should be at the centre of all health-related services, including education.
- People must be treated with respect and dignity, observing their right to privacy and confidentiality at all times.
- Users and carers have the right to know the standards of confidentiality and protection maintained by those obtaining information for educational purposes.
- Informed consent from users and carers participating in any form of educational activity is essential.
- Users and carers may expect to be appropriately remunerated for any educational role they agree to undertake.
