Spotlight on MSc Finance

Wondering what you might expect as an MSc Finance student at Cass Business School? Read on…

Why choose MSc Finance ?

Founded more than 20 years ago, the MSc in Finance provides a solid background in the principles and applications of finance. By the end of the course, students will have a broad-ranging experience of quantitative techniques relevant to finance with a focus on financial issues in all industry sectors. There is a genuinely international, multicultural perspective with a global focus. It is a highly flexible qualification suitable for a wide range of career openings in the financial sector.

In 2016 the Financial Times ranked the course 5th in the UK for pre-experience Masters in Finance.

Take a look at the core modules and typical electives that are on offer. Some of our electives are taught in a block format overseas, which is a great way to make the most of travel opportunities whilst studying.

What employment opportunities are there?

The course sets students up with a strong foundation to gain employment in roles including investment banking, securities sales and trading, foreign exchange, hedge funds, private banking, credit products, financial and credit risk management and consultancy. However, the course does not limit graduates to those roles – in fact, the breadth of the course and flexibility of the qualification allow students to perform a wide variety of functions. Typical companies that our graduates go on to work for are Nomura, Lazard Asset Management, PwC, Renaissance Capita, HSBC, JP Morgan, and RBS. Continue Reading →

Advice on tuition fees payment

As in-person registration draws near and you are completing online registration, we thought we would share some advice on how you can pay the first instalment of tuition fees.

You need to pay at least half of your tuition fees in order to complete the online part of registration, which must be done before you arrive at Cass Business School. You will need to pay fees to complete this process and be able to print out the certificate you will require to complete in-person registration. You will be able to see during this process how much fees are showing in your account.

Fees are paid to the same account as your deposit. The most efficient way is to pay by credit/debit card through https://epay.city.ac.uk/city/ City University does not charge for using this method.

Alternatively you can pay by a bank transfer or internet transfer from your bank account. You will have received our bank details when you accepted your offer, or you can find them on our website. Please remember to use your student number and your name as the payment reference so your payment can be allocated correctly. Continue Reading →

Where and how do our Business School students get hired?

In our last blog entry we looked at the graduate recruitment market in the UK and what it takes to secure a place on a graduate trainee programme. In our next blog, Relationship Manager-David Shute, gives us an insight into where and how Cass students get hired as well as a more in-depth look at alternatives to joining graduate trainee programmes.

So where do Cass students get hired?

You only have to browse the alumni pages of Cass Business School on LinkedIn to see the diverse range of industries, job roles and countries that our students work in and this is reflected in our annual survey of destinations of Cass Post Graduates.

Looking at our most recent survey of the graduating Class of 2014, the top four recruiters of Cass MSc students were the ‘Big Four’ Professional Services firms – PwC, EY, Deloitte and KPMG, which perhaps reflects the volume of graduates that these employers recruit for. For example PwC was the UK’s second largest employer of graduates in 2014 reporting that they will be taking on 1,570 graduates this summer.

Similarly, other top recruiters of Cass students in 2014 were large organisations in sectors such as Consultancy (e.g. Accenture, Capita), Banking and Financial Services (e.g. JP Morgan, Credit Suisse, RBS, HSBC, Barclays, Lloyds Banking Group), and Real Estate (CBRE, Jones Lang LaSalle).

These, again, are large organisations and as such will recruit in higher numbers compared to smaller organisations and taking a further look at our data for the class of 2014 many are employed by Small to Medium Enterprises and include: Cambridge Guarantee Group, SCIO Capital and Stephanie Churchill PR. Upgrading your offer

As final degree results come out, many of you will now be in a position to upgrade your offer to unconditional. If you are a conditional offer holder, please send us the documents required to upgrade your offer as you receive them. You can refer to your offer letter to check what your offer conditions are.

Verification of key documents

We require an original or certified version (i.e. stamped by your university) of your final degree transcript to be sent to us as a hard copy (post/courier/personal delivery) – we cannot accept scans, photocopies or emails.

For Chinese degrees we also require a certified copy of the graduation certificate and an online degree verification report (http://www.chsi.com.cn/) with the verification code.

Two references either sent from the work email address of the referee or a hard copy sent in a sealed envelope.

Access with GMAC to verify your GMAT result – it helps us to track the result if you also send us a copy of your report which includes the appointment number.

Copy of your IELTS report which we will verify online using the TRF number.

There may be some other documents that need verification such as professional qualifications or proof of employment – you will have been informed if these are necessary. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact your Admissions Officer for advice.

Narrowly missed conditions

If you are in the position that you have narrowly missed the conditions of your offer then please contact us to discuss your position before searching for an alternative. You will need to email your Admissions Officer the evidence of your results and they will seek advice as to whether any alternative can be offered.

We look forward to receiving your documents – good luck with your final results!

Course Availability

As summer approaches, many of you will have recently finished your finals and might be considering your options for the year ahead. If you are thinking of taking a Masters at Cass Business School but have not yet applied, we strongly recommend that you submit your application as soon as possible. We welcome applications on a rolling basis, and close our courses when they are full. Three of our courses have now closed for applications (MSc Finance, MSc Banking and International Finance, and MSc Management), and the majority of our remaining courses are likely to close within the next couple of months.

So, if you’re interested, please submit your online application form, where you can also upload your documents including your degree transcript (the final transcript, if possible, or an interim one if you are still awaiting your final results), personal statement, CV, evidence of English proficiency (if necessary) and any other documents you feel will enhance your application. You may wish to read our guidance on how to fill out the application form.

Students requiring a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK should especially consider submitting their application soon, in order to ensure that there is sufficient time to prepare your visa application over the summer.

If you have any queries about the courses or application process, please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to receiving your application!

Comments Off on Advice for offer-holders

Advice for offer-holders

As summer approaches, and you are making your plans, the following information may help you to prepare for joining Cass Business School in September. This advice is designed to help you avoid the most common problems encountered by students in the final weeks before joining the course. Please read it carefully, as it is advisable to plan ahead, particularly if you require a T4 student visa, rather than have lots to prepare at the last minute.

  • The in-person registration date for your course is 14 September 2015 so please take this into account when making travel arrangements so you will not arrive late.
  • Please make sure you advise your admissions officer of any change in contact details, particularly your email address, as otherwise you may miss vital information. Remember to check your email regularly as we will be sending out important information as the start date approaches. Information on induction and in-person registration and ID checks will also be posted on the induction website, and you are advised to check that regularly also.
  • Conditional offer holders, please send us documents required to upgrade your offer as you receive them, rather than wait until you have everything. We require an original or certified copy of your final degree transcript to be sent to us as a hard copy (post/courier/personal delivery) in order to upgrade offers that are conditional on degree results – we cannot accept scans, photocopies or emails. If you have any questions about which documents are still outstanding, please contact your Admissions Officer for advice.
  • Planning to return to your home country/travel after you finish your exams? It may be possible to arrange for your university to post a copy of your transcript to us, so please think about that before you leave the UK.
  • If you require a T4 student visa for your studies at Cass, plan ahead and ensure you do everything in good time, to avoid last minute panics. Make sure you understand the UKVI requirements for visa applications (they may have changed in the past few months), particularly with regard to the financial documents required for visa applications. For further information please visit our website and apply in good time for your application to be processed. Our visa advisers are ready to help you with any visa related issues, and can be contacted on visaadvice@city.ac.uk. You will receive information on how to request your CAS Statement when your offer is upgraded to unconditional.
  • You will receive a link to our Induction Website when it is activated during the summer. You will find useful information on this site, so we advise you to check it regularly for updates and additions.
  • Unconditional offer-holders will receive an email inviting you to complete online registration when the system goes live (normally around July); conditional offer-holders will receive this shortly after your offer is upgraded. If you do not receive this please contact your Admissions Officer.

If you need any further information, please contact your Admissions Officer. We look forward to meeting you in September.
