From the 25th of February to the 10th of March 2013, City University joined the rest of the world in celebrating Fairtrade Fortnight.

Below are some of the highlights from the week:

People & Planet Workshop: Want a Fairer world?

People and Planet hosted an interactive workshop where students learnt about the different injustices in the world and how to campaign for a fairer world.

Students discussing the issues that concern them with the Facilitator. One of the issues brought up was that of the injustice in the clothing marketing. We could all do more to improve the situation by buying Fairtrade clothing where possible!

Fairtrade Quiz competition

In the Student Centre, Students and Staff  had the opportunity to test their Fairtrade Knowledge…

The Fantastic Fairtrade Quiz stand in the Student Centre…Participants were offered the chance to win a Life Bottle from Tapwater.org

Fairtrade Chocolates and Other goodies on sale

Chocolate lovers had a special treat courtesy of Divine Chocolate…

There’s more to Fairtrade than coffee and chocolate! At the Traidcraft stand you could even get bracelets and other Fairtrade accessories!

Waste not, want not!

So many resources go into producing all types of food including Fairtrade food. Wasting food is not only bad for the environment, it is bad for our pockets too! The two Love Food Hate Waste workshops organised in conjunction with the North London Waste Authority provided useful tips on how to reduce food waste, an issue which has received a lot of media attention of late. It’s not surprising since everyday in the UK we apparently throw away 0.7 million whole bars of chocolate and unwrapped sweets – (probably including Fairtrade products!). As always there were some cool recipes on offer to help us use and manage our food better. Check out these fantastic Fairtrade Love Food Hate Waste Recipes: (Last Minute Christmas Cake and Pineapple and Banana Smoothie

Fairtrade Cook-offs

Still on the subject of food, it would not be a City Fairtrade fortnight without our classic Fairtrade cook offs. this year, the cook-offs took place at the Cass Business School. Look out for some amazing footage captured by one of our student environmental champions.

Information Stalls

Macro vs. Micro – Should Fairtrade welcome big business into the market?

The highlight of the week was the Fairtrade Panel discussion jointly organised by City University London and the Islington Fairtrade Steering group. The panelists included:

  • Dan Crossley (Executive Director, Food Ethics Council)
  • Atif Choudhury (UK Director, Zaytoun)
  • Vidya Rangan (Research and Impact Manager, Fairtrade Foundation)
  • Ian Bretman (Vice-Chair, Fairtrade International, 2008-2012)
and our very own Tim Lang, a Professor of Food Policy at City University London. Footage from the event as captured by our student environmental champions and journalism students will follow shortly.
